No, it will bend the blades. however will chop radishes.

How hard do you need to push the lid down? I've carpal tunnel/arthritis problems so strength in hands is not brilliant.

If you cut the garlic in half, it is much easier to push down. If not, then you will need a bit more strength. Sometimes I find it a bit hard to push if I am too lazy to slice it in half.
