Can you use normal sandpaper or does it have to be hook and loop?

Hi, yes you can just cut to size and punch the holes in, be advised iv used this for about a year now a few little niggles iv had with mine, the clips that hold the sand paper on didn't hold when I first used it to slack, so bent the clips so it had a tighter grip, dust bag pointless keeps coming off and doesn't fill with dust. when you turn it on instant high power I wanted to turn down to a slower power but you cant but got used to it, the sand paper is always sliding off to the side when doing heavy sanding, if you are doing light sanding jobs then it would be great, Iv used it a few times to sand paint and varnish with a heavy 60 grit sandpaper took ages, but I got this Christmas a black and Decker palm sander with Velcro disc sand paper which is far easier for quick changing of the sand paper and it sands painted wood down in minutes, so my Makita will probably sit in the cupboard now. This is my opinion im not a professional crafts man but do lots of DIY.

Any idea about the differences between bo4555 and bo4556 please?

I've used both. Burnt out my BO4555 and replaced with the BO4556. Can't tell the difference in performance or noise! I have used both extensively on decorating jobs- nothing to choose between them. Just buy the one at the best price- it's a very good sander. Have seen a lot of other tradesmen using them. The hook and loop fastening wears off fairly swiftly so just buy a roll of the relevant sandpaper and tear off the correct length and use the clamp system. You WILL end up buying replacement grinder plates with heavy usage, but these are available on Amazon.

Iâm a little confused the title name states that the Makita BO4556 sander is 240 volts but the spec states 120 can someone clarify the difference

I can promise you that my Makita BO4556 sander is definitely 240v. It may be that the product description is taken from the American specification which would indeed be be 120volts.

Does it come with a carry case?

No carry case, just the cardboard box containing the sander, dustbag and hole punch.I keep mine in a small canvas M&S bag along with a couple of rolls of the sandpapers I use most often- 80 and 120 grit.Carry-cases are usually overly bulky and have no room for the sandpaper. If you have a fair bit of kit, and use carry cases for everything then you end up having to lug around too much unnecessary stuff.Hope this helps.
