Q: Does this work with a 20 year old sony cdp-cx240 200 cd changer?

If it's IR then it will work. I have my transmitter target begin some cloth and it still works, so I think it works great.

You'll need one IR receiver for each location where you want to receive infrared signals, and one emitter for each location where you want to emit infrared signals.

Q: How far away can I be with remote control and still have it pick up the signal efficiently?

It's hard to believe only 5ft, have you put in brand new batteries & cleaned the little window on the end of the remote and all the glass on the front of the fireplace? If you have. This is a great IR repeater. It has IR outputs that have double sided tape to mount in the perfect (sweet) spot Mine is 20ft and 2 walls away
