Are you able to adapt this with a Sawyer mini to create a better all around filter system?

We use both Sawyer and Berkey. Don't know if you can adapt it not sure why you want to. Berkey is still a better filter than Sawyer. It removes chlorine.

will filter fit other water bottles and straws ?

I took my Berkey Sport filter (and tubing) off my Berkey Sport bottle and put it on my Hydro Flask and 808 Hi-Dr8 (just like a Hydro Flask, just different brand) sipper top and it works great as long as you've already flushed out the filter in the Berkey bottle before hand. If you don't, the first sip will be nasty and contain a bunch of grey stuff from the filter. This is clearly stated in the Berkey Sport instructions but can't be done in a hard-wall bottle because you want to squeeze the bottle to clear out the filter before use.

I bought a few extra filters but noticed mine had a much smaller tab that connects into the water line which wouldn't work. What's the deal with that?

They have made bottles with small and big tubing at different points in time. I've had both so when I got new filters I was able to swap some parts out. It's pretty annoying that they changed it.

The filter i just received is orange. my original filter was black and the amazon site shows a black filter. did i get a fake one ?
