Q: Does this come with the pieces to make it remote controlled? I saw a review that says it doesn't.

Hello! This particular LEGO® train set does not included the Power Functions components necessary to motorize it. Power Functions items 8879, 8884, 88000, and 88002 can be purchased separately though. These along with the included instructions (at the end of the last building instruction book) will go together to get your train powered down the tracks!

Hello! We recommend ages 12+ for this one, though we know many fans younger than the recommended ages for LEGO® sets are very advanced. It sounds like you also have an advanced builder there. I can't say for sure that your 7 year old wouldn't run into any trouble with the build, however the challenge can also be a part of the fun for any LEGO set!

Q: Is this large enough to go around the tree?

It depends on if your tree is more like Charlie Brown's or Rockefeller Center's! The diameter is actually 27 inches which can go around the typical families Christmas tree with plenty of room. Just in case your tree is larger or you want it even further from your tree you can always purchase extra track. The extra track set numbers are 7499 and 7895.
