Can food (i.e crumbs) get stuck between crevices?

Yes. It is woven not a solid fabric. These are beautiful though and you can easily take them to the sink and shake the crumbs off. They wipe off nicely too

Are these thick enough to be used as a trivet/hotpad?

I definitely would not use them as a hotpad on fine furniture - maybe on a hard surface such as quartz or stone.

can these be used under an electric coffee maker

Dear customer, this placemat is made of natural rattan, so the placemat cannot be wet for a long time, if there is water on the placemats, you need wipe it with damp cloth and dry it in ventilated place.

Do these placemats "shed" as in leave underneath of it tiny bits of the placemats (so you have to clean underneath them every time?)?

I don’t see that happening with the ones that I bought. It is possible that it could happen over time as the fibers become dry but mine are new and seem fine
