Q: How many ounces does this hold?

It doesn't say on it, so I measured it. It holds 16 oz.

Q: is it 500ml or 550ml?

According to Zojirushi's website, it's 0.5L (500 mL) http://www.zojirushi.com/products/sweae

Q: So what's the deal with this "lid set?" I can't figure out what function it accomplishes...

Its a check valve that allows air into the container when the contents cool. It apparently solves a problem I never had with a vacuum bottle, that leaving it to cool would make it difficult to remove the screw-top lid. Despite the overkill in complexity, it's still a great container, and keeps soup and stews hot for hours. I'm really happy with the purchase. I bought the 500 ml model, but in retrospect, for taking soup to work, the 375 ml would have been the better choice.
