RAID 5 takes one drive for redundancy. Since you're asking about the 16TB (4 x 4TB) system, you will lose 4TB (one drive) of storage to redundancy, leaving you with 12TB of useable storage.

Q: Will this work with m1 mac?

Hello. Yes the ThunderBay will work on a M1 Mac. The version of SoftRAID that this comes with does not work, so you will need to install the beta version of SoftRAID.

Q: Assume no raid. if i install an independent drive from another drive enclosure, does it need to be reformatted to be used in the thunderbay 4?

Hello. The OWC ThunderBay does not have a RAID controller and uses Software to create raids. That being said you would be able to take an independent drive and installing into the ThunderBay 4 without needing to reformat the drive.
