The Book in Question (eBook): Why and How Reading Is in Crisis

Reading is Definitely in Crisis
Part call to action and part solutions to our current and past reading crisis, Carol Jago, former English teacher and editor of the journal California English, tells us how to get kids into he habit of reading. She mentions specific titles: "Reading books like The Hate You Give can change lives." She wants kids to read and reread eclectically, not just classics. She points out that kids from all income levels are arriving at college unprepared. Jago cites studies like the one that shows teachers who allow students to "redo shabby work" teach resiliency. She wants teachers to trash the worksheets and allow students to choose books they like. The author is very honest about her reading faults, like skimming and reading too fast, but contends that "those who read more know more." As a former English teacher and retired principal, I agree completely. I just hope she's not simply "singing to the choir" because it's hard not to notice apathetic readers in one's classroom, and Carol will tell you some important things to do to correct that. 5 stars!
