Q: How sturdy is the back of the bin? It looks like thinner wood.

It's sturdy. Wood not as thick as the rest of the bin but not flimsy like cardboard. I love mine!

The 2 and 3 door Pine Vegetable Bins / Bread Box does come already assembled. Hope that helps! Thanks!

Q: I would like to use this to store fruits and vegetables outside in the cooler months. Is the screen plastic mesh or chicken wire (critter proof!)?

It is wire on the bottom 3 sections...each opening in the screening is 1/2-inch wide. The top section has a plastic window and flips open.

It is 16.5 inches wide if you are facing it The 11 inch depth refers to measuring the side panel from the back to the front so if you put your hand inside of it it would be 11 inches
