I selected vernier over digital because I could get more caliper for my money. It reads to 3 decimal places and works every time. Hardened steel--very nice!

The caliper itself is first rate. A strong magnifying lens is helpful (or necessary if your eyesight isn’t good) to make out the Vernier. I usually find three or 4 marks that are nearly lined up and then take the center mark for the reading. The fine adjust may be optionally used and works well. As to the instructions and the case supplied with the unit, the word pathetic comes to mind. You would think they would supply an inexpensive plastic case with foam lining that some of the cheaper (15 to 30) dollar calipers come with or at least make one available as an optional accessory. As to the instructions, fortunately there are plenty of good web sites that provide a tutorial on using this kind of caliper. One good way to test the accuracy or proper use of a caliper is to check it against the various feeler gauges in an automotive feeler gauge set. If you have need to take many measurements on a daily basis, a good dial or digital caliper might make more sense; however, for ruggedness and accuracy, the Vernier caliper is probably best if it is properly used. Also, the Vernier caliper or a good micrometer could be used to verify the accuracy of a dial or digital caliper.

You know what to expect buying Mitutoyo, and these meet expectations. Accurate and a very nice overall finish. No complaints whatsoever.

I wonder about the origins of this Caliper? The workmanship does not reflect Mitutoyo quality at all. - The scales are printed, not etched. The markings seem to bleed a little bit from handling. - The corner edges are not regular and not consistent, as it happens when the various components are processed under different quality standards. - The face surfaces are all scratched. - The tie plate on the back has screw holes which are off-center and not symmetrical. - The finish on the various surfaces is not consistent, and on some of the surfaces it is very coarse. The Caliper is precise and perfectly usable; but I do wonder if it is an authentic Mitutoyo product.

Beautiful quality. Very accurate. Great movement. 5 star tool. 0 star case. Comes with only a plastic sleeve with a button closure. Would like to see a hard case at this price and quality.
