Q: Is there some trick to getting the screw to tighten enough to hold the detector in place?

The bracket slides into the radar detector to the slots. The nut only tightens so much to keep the detector from moving vertically. You can finger tighten it to as hard as your fingers can stand, but don’t over tighten it or you’ll strip the threads.
