Q: hello want bamboo to put in a container on our large deck in zone 7 (staten island ny) it will always be in a container what is best bamboo variety ?

I bought a black bamboo in January about 12 inches tall. Had it on my deck all summer it's now about 4ft maybe more it's in a very large container and has to be soaked everyday. I am in the Bronx and understood we were zone 4. I have a friend who works in research at the Botanical gardens she also has one on her terrace. She leaves it out in a sheltered spot all winter on the terrace and it's fine.

One or two plants will be sufficient. One if you are wanting to display the black canes more or 2 if you are looking for more a a privacy screen.

Q: How much should we water this plant?

Bamboo plants require LOTS of water. In really hot weather I water my black bamboo twice a day. I've had mine for 2 years now, it grew at a moderate rate last year...this year it's growing 1 to 2 feet per day.
