Write It Up: Practical Strategies for Writing and Publishing Journal Articles (APA LifeTools Series)

Excellent short course in the form
Silvia's second text for beleaguered academics who need to buckle down and write in order to publish is loaded with sound, pragmatic advice for novice and old hand alike. And it's humorous, upbeat tone is a bonus making the book far too fun for such a seemingly serious topic!

Live-saver for a non-writer
As someone with a background in Math, writing is not my strong suit. But I had a thesis to write for my Ed Psych Master's and I struggled with how to make it organized but not formulaic. When this book was recommended to me, that all changed. The book is well-written and interesting, as well as easy to read. Each chapter walked you through how to approach writing or writing related tasks while keeping everything flexible enough that you don't feel like you're just following instructions in your writing.

A useful (and funny) guide to academic writing
I'm a huge fan of Silvia's "How to Write a Lot." After buying that book about two years ago, I have set a daily writing schedule and stuck to it, and since doing so I have published several journal articles and gotten a federal grant. Silvia's new volume is incredibly useful, whether you are writing your first journal article or your fiftieth. It breaks down the process of writing journal articles into manageable bites (what are the three main formulas for an Introduction? When do you pick a target journal for your paper? What's the best strategy when you're asked to revise and resubmit a paper?), and it helped shake me out of some of the bad habits I'd developed. My writing was feeling stagnant, and this book gave me some needed perspective on how to communicate my ideas more effectively and efficiently. As a nice bonus, it's also really funny. Highly recommend.

If you're a grad student, get this book asap!
One of my favorite books to read! As a grad student looking to establish a writing routine and learn some insider manuscript information, this book does it all!

I got this for school. Honestly great book. I used it a few times. Nice to have but a lot of the information is online.

Recommend but might have one flaw...
I am a fan of Silva's How to Write a Lot. I found that book to be funny and the instructions on how to set a schedule very useful. This book, Write it Up, is also good with one major (in my opinion) flaw. The tone of How to Write a Lot was light with an underlying seriousness, and it workerd great. I believe that Silva has tried to maintain that same tone in this book. For me, though, I found the comments in this newer book to be distracting and not funny. It made the book somewhat irritating to read in places, though I understand this is a matter of taste. The book is still strong enough that I gave it four stars, but had the tone been more serious, I would have preferred it.Having said that, the book itself is useful and it has some solid advice. It is less expensive than other books that I preferred (i.e., Belcher's, Writing Your Journal Article in Twelve Weeks: A Guide to Academic Publishing Success.)I would definitely recommend this book to writer's who are, maybe, less solid in their skills, like I am, and I would recommend it to anyone who is maybe more confident but just wants to improve.

Excellent book.
Good synthesis on how to write scientific papers, including ideas on how to build a research program. Strongly recommended to graduate students.

I expected something more and different.
It’s a quick read but I thought it would be more beneficial for me. I was expecting something more than what I know about writing.

Great book!
This book has made writing my thesis so much easier! He provides such practical information and great suggestions for how to structure the paper. The hardest part of writing a paper is getting started and I found this book to be extremely helpful for writing outlines and getting into the writing. Another of his books 'How to Write a Lot' is also excellent.

Friendly advice of an experienced colleague
I enjoyed this one; having read it, I actually bought his first book, "How To Write A Lot" and am looking forward to more by Paul Silvia. "Write It Up" is very much a personal account of writing and editing manuscripts. In his characteristic casual and friendly style, Silvia talks about writing strategies, choice of words, style and grammar issues, determining authorship, choosing journals, corresponding with co-authors and editors, dealing with rejection and many other aspects of publishing process. It is not so much a workbook on writing manuscripts but rather a friendly advice of an experienced colleague. I’d recommend it without reservations - it's truly a good book totally worth reading, especially if you want to learn about nuts and bolts of scientific publishing; however, if you want more instruction, refer to Mimi Zeiger’s "Essentials of Writing Biomedical Research Papers " or Joshua Schimel’s "Writing Science".
