No vent. It works on pans ranging from 7" to 12" except the cast iron skillet. The handle on a cast iron is at the same level as the rim of the skillet, so it props up the lip on the lid.

Does the handle get too hot to touch?

The handle is thick enough that it surprisingly hasn't gotten too hot to touch. You may want to be careful not to touch the rest of the lid, though, as it's not as thick as the handle and may become hot.

Can someone tell me the actual width of this lid measured across the underside?

the internal size of the lip is 12.25" and the lip is a bit less than .25" I have used this on pans from 6" to the full width. Itr is a universal size so it is not always the best fit but it sure is better than having ten different lids in a pinch. remember that it is a flat lid so your food has to be below the edge of the pan. This may sound rather obvious but has been as issue a few times.
