When a Taylor Swift lyric becomes a very awkward birthday card.
At first glance this looks like a cute Taylor Swift themed birthday card. Then you realise the joke. The card says: “It’s me, hi, I’m the birthday girl, it’s me.” This is clearly a reference to the lyric from Anti-Hero: “It’s me, hi, I’m the problem, it’s me.” (see the photo attached). Which raises an interesting question: Is the birthday person supposed to be… the problem? In the song the line is intentionally self-deprecating and ironic. In a birthday card it just feels like the card is politely informing the recipient that they are the issue. This might work as a meme between friends with a very specific sense of humour. But as an actual birthday card for a real Taylor Swift fan, it is a bit like giving someone a cake that says “Congratulations on your existential crisis.” Nice design, but the message makes this feel more like an internet joke than a birthday card.
