The description says wire rope but it looks like most people use it for regular rope. Is it designed for standard rope?

Yes. It can be used with 5/8" regular rope for fall protection.

Can the rope grab be attached mid rope or must it slide up from the bottom?

You have to feed the rope through the bottom (or top). I have seen rope pulleys which separate in the middle to allow mid-rope attachment, but not a grabber.

Can I use this on a 1/2 climbing rope without wanting to slip or anything

No. order one that states its for 1/2" rope. This is for 5/8" rope. It won't grab enough

Do these work on polypropylene rope?

Of course they do but it all boils down on what material made rope do you prefer and what you trust we use them with polyester it’s just a preference and what application it’s being used for
