This is a great radio for the price. We have UV-5R radios at work, and I was surprised at how much larger the 5RM is. The larger battery is good for more talk time and provides enough power to leave the display turned on if you wish.The one-touch NOAA weather radio reception is good, but it does not monitor for weather alerts.Air band reception is good for hearing aircraft, but do not expect to hear ground stations unless you are close to an airport.The radio I got did not come with a charging cradle. The trend seems to be USB C charging.The 5RM displays the same block numbers as the 5R - all vertical and horizontal lines. For example, a 7 is mirror image of an upside down capital L. The numbers are quite legible on the larger screen, but I prefer the curves and diagonal lines of the UV-21.The 5RM receives FM radio and automatically switches to two-way mode when there is main channel activity or you press the talk button. Press the #z button to seek to the next station. I think most recent Baofeng radios include this feature but not sure about the FM seek feature. Do not expect audio quality to match a car radio.You can scan memory channels or VFO scan. Scan speed is much slower than a dedicated scanner.The search function (close call) has a dedicated green key. Search takes only a few seconds to find and monitor very strong signals in one these bands that you select; VHF, UHF, 200, and 350. If it finds a strong signal, it displays the frequency and squelch code and continues to monitor until you reset or cancel the search. Press the menu button, and select an empty channel to save the search. It does not search air band, although you can do a VFO scan of the air band. Some other Baofeng radios include a search function, but the green key on the front provides easier access.

COmpared to the UV-5R, this is physically bigger.Battery is bigger and has usb-c charging.The carger is different and has a bracket labelled 5RH so it seems they can use the same charger with others though the spacing of the contacts is different to the uv-5r so it's not compatible with that one.It is 3 bands (FM) plus NOAA, and air band (RX, AM)Menus are similar to uv-5r but color screen is a nice touch.The M variant also has a scrambler feature (Menu 45) while the L does not. Not sure how legal it is to use though.Comes with two antennas. a short one (136-174, 400-520) and a longer one (TD 771 136-174, 400-480) so it seems you will need your own antenna for 1.25m (220MHz) band.

Nice Handheld ham radio good Audio quality works as expected

TFT color display is excellent. Model 5RM is slightly larger in all 3 dimensions... an advantage for stability on a table top.THe radio feels much more solid. Build quality feels and looks excellent. Nice improvements in the firmware & operational software. The reference booklet is only a general guide. Chirp programming support is excellent.The pre-recorded voice is the same as the UV-5R / BF-F8HP, but slightly lower quality. RX audio in the loudspeaker is fine, same as the BF-F8HP with slightly higher output volume capability. The 2500mAhr Li-Ion battery life is nearly 2 days on RX standby with the TFT timeout set at 15sec. Very likely to become my new - go-to HT. The 999 memory channels are a very welcome expansion over the BF-F8HP's 200 memories. There may be some firmware conflicts with the USB-C charging system. The booklet is fairly explicit about the best practices for USB-C battery charging and should be adopted. The radio gave me a slap on the wrist as I initially ignored the USB-C charging advice, and the Loudspeaker audio went into a mute condition that required a re-load of the initial factory img file. - Do not forget to save that setup with Chirp for your Base line backup before you load in your own channel programming data.

The radio is well made it receives good and the sound is very good. The only negative I have is the advertisement that you can listen to the local police well you can’t I find out after I purchase it. So to use a a ham only radio it is perfect it is not ment to be a scanner for the police. I am still happy with it
