The green wrapping is part of the working string. I presume it tidies up the termination of the steel string (no messy ends). It will not dampen the sound of the vibrating string (between the bridge and the nut). Leave it on, most string manufacturers do something similar. These are very nice strings. Bright sound (many flat wound strings damp the high frequencies and the sound has less definition and articulation). Better still, they are silky smooth.

Roundwound are the common string on fretted basses. Bright and percussive as well as the low bass sound in rock, indie, pop music. Flats are also used on fretted basses but are smooth under your fingers, with a warmer bass sound. Favoured mainly by serious musicians on fretted bass - pop, jazz. They are commonly used on fretless bass for their smoothness on fingers and fretboard surface. However like you say they are more expensive. Either are great but I prefer flats.

Hi. My strings had no cotton wraps, but, DO NOT REMOVE THE COTTON. Its normal, most makes have red cotton. String bass as normal, cutting any extra length off. You want only 2 or 3 winds on tuners. Then enjoy the feel and sound of these excellent strings.

Will these fit a new fender vintera mustang bass ? through body design...
