The Art and Science of Figure Drawing: Learn to Observe, Analyze, and Draw the Human Body

This is not a book
I didn’t think it was possibly to get worse than the previous book by eviston, but he somehow managed it.The book is a lot more balanced between text and pictures this time, but everything else is worse. The first lesson you get to make is “draw heads.” No explanation HOW to draw heads, just to do it.Then the same for “torsos,” but they look like jelly beans stomachs with detailed butts. Then we get the meat of the book, which is (I’m not joking) commands to copy every single drawing in the book. Instead of giving a lesson on heads (after we were already tasked to draw heads 20+ pages earlier), he says “copy each these heads [circles with x’s on them] exactly.”Then more “copy X exactly” with a page of very crude shapes with gesture lines on them. Then we get lessons that outright say “copy every picture in this chapter. Then it ends. The rest of the book are detailed drawings of heavyset and old people with very prominent genitals. Also a fully naked man showing you his penis with stretched legs and rubbing his chest hair as a chapter introduction picture. I don’t mean a drawing of that, a photograph of a bearded, middle aged man rubbing his chest hair as he kneels full wide legs on the floor. This is not given as something to draw either, nor is there any warning. It’s just the picture that introduces one of the chapters in the middle of the book.Ever want to know what the vaginas of middle aged, 200+ lb women look like? Don’t worry, eviston not only has you covered but he certainly adds a lot of line weight to the genitals of his drawings. Early on in the book he gives a step-by-step drawing (the ONLY step-by-step drawing I can tell of any detail in the whole thing) of a flabby, cellulite covered woman and the first detail he draws on top of the construction lines is her vulva and then pubic hair.I wish I was joking about all of this, but sadly I am not. This book is not an art instruction book, this book is an outright “spinal tap”-level parody of art instruction books as a genre.

Great instructional book
Just learning to draw and have bought several cheaper books and this is by far one of the best instructional drawing books I have purchased. Would highly recommend.

Straightforward practical advice
Nice book, lots of good examples.. and gives access to a large number of photo reference on web also. Not for complete beginners: he suggests learn to draw, before learning to draw figure.. which makes a lot of sense. The example gesture and more finished drawings are good and I get the impression Eviston has thought carefully about how to teach. Plenty of YouTube content if you want a preview of his ideas, the book is a distillation. There is a long and slightly strange review on here that is confusing and does not match the book content (as far as I can see). The book may not be to every taste, but there is nothing weird or extreme about it, just straightforward advice on figure drawing and a lot of examples, written by someone who has clearly studied and learned to teach the subject.
