Very sturdy ..yes...But I wouldn't run it threw the heated drying though just to be safe!

Is this mat safe to use in a refinished cast iron / porcelain sink?

It works great in our porcelain kitchen sink. There are no metal parts that would scratch anything, and the bottom of the mat is covered with rows of round, rubber "feet". It's the best sink mat I've ever found. I use it on one side of our double sink.

Will it hold the weight of a dishpan with water and items to be hand washed?

The feet on the bottom are interspersed throughout and should hold a dishpan full of dishes and water with no problem.
