I know this is a dumb question, but can you remove the sonar part?

You can turn it off switching to manual mode. It can be professionally removed if you want to modify the camera, but you have to know what you are doing... What are you trying to accomplish? Why not just buy SX-70 apha 1, model one, or model 2 that are the same minus the sonar?
