METIS Series 2400 Watts 18" Powered PA/DJ Subwoofer with Class-D Amplifier, Birch Plywood, Black (METIS-PRO18AS)

This review is specifically for the 18inch Class-D Amp variant of this sub. EDIT 2: Was sent a new one that works just fine! Great sub. Edit 10-17-2020: The sub has been great until about a half hour ago. Haven't pushed any clipping signal through it or anything, but everything is suddenly distorted sounding, particularly at low volumes, no matter what I play or what input I use. It would appear I've got a defective unit. I've contacted SoundTown to inquire about a warranty, will update this when I get a reply to see how they handle this. Edit: I sent SoundTown a video of what I was experiencing and they sent me a new unit without having to ship the old one back. New one arrived and works wonderfully. Let me start by telling you my experience with audio. I've been producing bass heavy hip-hop and electronic music for about 15 years, and playing out the same styles for about 6 years at clubs, venues and parties on everything from Behringer to Funktion. Proper low end is absolutely critical for me and the music I'm accustomed to. For monitoring I've been using JBL LSR308's for 4 years and recently upgraded to the JBL 308P MK2s with the 310S sub. My 10 inch sub costs $40 more than this bad boy. I'm genuinely impressed by this sub! I had two Rockville RBG12S 12in subs for smaller gigs alongside Behringer B210D's for tops, the rockvilles could barely touch a Low F (44hz). They had kick, but no follow through; the low RUMBLE that you want with big bass music with 808's and dominant basslines. Quite rough for 12's, but that's not what this review is about. The METIS-18SDWP is fantastic value! Their response is much more rounded, but still heavy on the lower kickdrum frequencies (60/70hz-ish). The low lows (<44hz) aren't quite as prominent which is usually the case with cheaper subs. This is with the crossover filter tuned as low as it goes (40hz). However, doing tests with sine wave oscillators, I blasted a low C note (32.8hz) through this thing and it shook everything, no distortion until you start nearing clip. So the frequency range is what you should expect from an 18. Because of the resonance around that 70hz or so, the simple fix is to use a graphic EQ to even out the tone some more. Either way, massive upgrade from what I had before. Two of those 12inch Rockvilles can't touch this single Sound Town 18 on sound quality. Bear in mind that is does NOT support stereo out. It has input A and B but for whatever reason it sums the input to mono. So you'll either need two for L and R respectively or to route only one speaker with the sub, in which case you'll get half signal so you'll have to compensate with turning everything else down. Or put it on your booth out, there's ways around this so it's not a super huge deal. My 10inch JBL LSR310S has more rounded sound than this, but it is not as powerful (550w RMS less, go figure). Still, that's 40 more bucks for 8inches less, so the 10 is going to be a more thoroughly designed product. Regardless, I've been playing with it for about an hour and I absolutely can't complain due to the amazing value; Sound Town has definitely left a good impression on me with this. I'm going to take it to a party in about a month and if there are any updates, I'll update this review. For right now, I would most *definitely* nab one (or even two) of these if you want strong low end for a fraction of what most 18's cost. =Takeaway= Build: Decent, I *hate* carpet exterior because it's a hair/crap magnet and my cat loves it. It's quite heavy (about 90lbs) and large. I barely managed to squeeze this in my little saturn. Along with 3x 10in tops, my XDJ-XZ (soft case), XDJ-1000MK2 (also soft case), 3 speaker stands, a 4.6ft long table, and a backpack. It all fit with room to spare believe it or not. Features: The crossover works, but it's not the steepest so you'll still get resonance no matter how low you put it. It does NOT support stereo output. The <100hz hipass does the job, but unless you're ok with mono sum, you will want two or a different routing. Sound: Good, but lacks uniformity. Lots of "punch", a little less "rumble". Resonance around 60-70hz contributes to this imbalance, but the sub does reach very low (<38hz). Crossover helps a bit, but not as much as I'd like. EQ/Compression can help with this. Value: Incredible, I'm super glad I bought this instead of spending 1, 2, or 400 more dollars on something else. Would suggest the same unless the resonant frequencies bother you and you can't be bothered to EQ.

I’ve got two of these and they are AWESOME!!!! Our theater is 22x40 and they absolutely rock the house. Ten stars!

Here's a long-term review. I have had it for about 2 years. I use it mostly for room about the size of a basketball court. It does a decent job, considering people only using half the room for dancing. Sound quality wise, it offers a bit more bass than my 15" JBL PA speakers. It doesn't put out really deep bass. It seems to drop off around 40hz. That's almost expected for a ported subwoofer. It's not the smoothest or best sounding subwoofer, but it's decent. The untrained ear will not know the difference. Especially while dancing, nobody is looking for sound quality. They are looking for the feel of the bass, which this has. Performance was good. The bass is extremely noticeable. It doesn't handle abuse and heavy bass songs very well. The sub blew after about a year and a half. My son was trying to play rap music with it while at a house party. I am about to replace it with a Rockville 18" subwoofer. It states the RMS power is 700 watts. I would actually be surprised if it was more than 500 Watts. My overall thoughts? It's a really good sub, for the price. As long as you don't try to shake the building with it, it will last you a while. just keep an eye on the "Clipping" light. It's heavy compared to the plastic enclosures, but it's about as heavy as all the other wooden enclosures. For the price of a name-brand subwoofer, you can get 2 or 3 of these. That will provide a lot more bass and offer a backup.

Absolutely impressed. This thing sounds exactly as you hope it would. I purchased a second one because of how fast they shipped the first one to me. I would recommend this to anyone.

I thought I'd give these guys a try since the earlier revues were ok. I unboxed this and hooked it into my system. Simple hookup from my X-air digital mixer straight to the sub and paired with my Alto 2way top boxes. I ran Pandora radio from my phone into the mixer to test the system and at first all seemed well. I was working on the eq of the overall system and had run for about 30-40 minutes then decided to take a break and as the rig was idling with no signal the Soundtown Sub suddenly gave a loud electric growl from something shorting then died except for a pulsing sound probably from a capacitor DCing through the speaker. I shut it off and then tried a restart after the Cap drained and stopped pulsing but the amp was cooked and wouldn't fire up. There was that acrid smell of burned electric components also. Others may have had good luck but a catastrophic failure like this in less than an hour of mild use is a sign of bad quality control. One customer gets a sub that works and one customer gets a piece of junk! I won't be playing roulette with these guys ever again and to add insult to injury the customer is stuck boxing and paying the return shipping on a 94lb subwoofer! By the time I get through this ordeal I may get about half my money back and still have to go buy a better Sub to finish my system. I was always told "You buy the best stuff ONCE, you buy the cheap junk stuff over and over again". I wish I'd remembered that before buying this cheap junk. Do yourself a favor and spend a little more for the good stuff and the good stuff is NOT from Soundtown otherwise you have a 50/50 chance of landing in my shoes with a blown up piece of junk that you have to spend a bunch more money on to return. Don't do it!

Very cheap, low quality. Advertises 2400W but the sub is only 400W and cheaply made. One blew shortly after a year. The other the cheap knobs broke off so easily. And forget buying replacements, especially in Canada! Total gouge on replacement parts especially with shipping. I do NOT recommend especially if you are in Canada. Spend the money for Yorkville made in Canada.

I am hesitant to buy this unit, but i did try and buy a sample and yes, expected to have a good bass throw. Solid cabinet and a good punch same as those high end brnd in the market that range grand. Thanks Sound town. Will get another 1 to pair my current sub!
