Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert: French Classics in French and English(Dual-Language Book)

Well presented, an easy book to read having the French and corresponding English translation on opposite pages.I would recommend this publication to anyone learning French.

This is a hefty paperback with nice large print and the French and English versions of Madame Bovary line up well on opposing pages. However, this translation by Eleanor Marx (daughter of Karl Marx) shows its age. It's simple, literal, and sometimes inaccurate. So in one sense it's good for beginners, in another sense not. More modern English translations will bring out the nuances in this work. My favourite version is by Christopher Moncrieff, which I can't imagine being bettered for a generation. The ease of being able to compare both languages side by side is certainly a winner, though. I think this would be an ideal book to start with, then transfer to a more sophisticated version. That way, you get the best of both worlds. But you'll learn a lot with this one alone, and at £12 for 568 spacious pages it's good value.

The side-by-side pages are well done but the translation is really weak, often having clear grammatical errors. The book also doesn't have the famous italics, which is a real necessity when reading Madame Bovary

Loved this book for many reasons. First, I greatly enjoy Flaubert and this is a book I've been holding off on reading for a while because I wanted to read it in the native tongue in which it was written. I finally got to a point where I was confident my comprehension was good enough and this duel language version was instrumental in making that leap comfortably. The book is brilliantly synced so when my mind got tired I could easily find the idioms and clips and phrases I was misunderstanding in French on the opposite English page, and as I continued through the book I was reading more fluently than when I started and had less of a need for the English translation [but it was still a comfort having it there]. Enjoyed it so much I just picked up La Dame aux Camelias by the same publisher. Do yourself the favor if you think you're there and grab this book!

This will do it with side-by-side translation, you can read it in French, English or a combination if you are trying to get your French/English reading up. Great book too....

Because of the high mastery of style Flaubert used in his writings this bilingual edition is very useful for the English reader trained in French.

Hope it will be a book I can read after I advance a bit further in my expanding Duolingo-enabled rusty High School decades old French. If I make it there; will return and further rate this.
