The Telomere Effect: A Revolutionary Approach to Living Younger, Healthier, Longer : Blackburn, Dr Elizabeth, Epel, Dr Elissa: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: Well written and very informative - Amazing book, I read it a few years ago, but it has all sorts of tips on how to prevent loss or boost your telomere health. Very well written and easy to follow. Review: A breathtaking discovery in science. A must read. - First of all this is a very well written and easy to understand book, so you don't need a background in science to understand it (although if you do you can see why this discovery is very exciting). The reason I bought this book was because I watched Elizabeth Blackburn on Ted talks and wanted to find out more and funnily enough she and her colleague had written this book together. I would fully recommend it.

Useful for everyone, never too early to invest in healthy ageing.
Love this audio book. Reader has a good voice and good intonations. Book it self is also very interesting. It has plenty of very useful and interesting information. It explains telomeres, what they mean for healthy ageing, what can be done to keep them long and healthy hence have a slower better ageing. Verdict is a combination of good mental care (meditation, mindfulness, MBCT or MBSR, yoga etc), clever exercising, good social interactions, correct nutrition, healthy environments plays a big role in maintain and possibly lengthen them. All claims supported by various scientific studies, which is important for me to believe in what is being said. Written by a Nobel winner Molecular Biologist and Psychologist. Very useful. I would recommend it to everyone. It is scientific as how it should be still very easy to read and understand. Highly recommended.

Lifestyle changes our genes ...
I am interested in the whole subject of longevity. I bought this book in order to get a scientific view on the concept of ageing. So far I am half way through the book and it is fascinating. The great thing is that if we change our lifestyle we can alter our genes. I think we all know that deep down. It is good to have a scientific explanation as to why lifestyle changes are important. Would recommend this book. A fairly easy read and the science is explained clearly for the layperson.

Less bioscience-y than expected
If you're on the cusp of psychology and biology this is probably some great extra reading. If you are in the biology-chemistry cusp there are probably better books out there (Nessa Carey books are a good example).

Good introduction to telomeres
As a quick jog-trot through the subject of telomeres and their effect on health the book is fine but in my opinion underplays the controversiality of some of the data and their interpretation and on the other hand overplays the mental/spiritual dimension. The latter may prove to be more important than we currently know but the book seems to assume what has yet to be proved. But to anyone new to the subject I would recommend it.

Beautiful book on telomere
At its current discount price, the book is beautiful and amazing; it's layperson-friendly and scientific. Look after your telomere. It provides in-depth knowledge on things that can improve or damage your telomere, including sleep, diet, stress, exercise, etc. All you probably know, but not in the context of telomeres.

This book opened up a whole new world of deeper understanding in me -- vital understanding to lead healthy lives -- at individual, community and social levels. That also makes it a highly spiritual book. Indispensable for those who are striving for happiness and trying hard to make the world a better place to live.

This is a wonderful book, a must to anyone wanting to know more about aging gracefully, and especially, healthy. This book provides clear information on how to prolong your "healthspan", as defined by the authors. The big difference between this work and the myriads of health-tips best-sellers is that every advice is backed up by scientific research, all the tips, ranging from food, exercise habits, mindfulness, etc. come from experimental results. And that is a big difference, at least for me. As Prof. Kandel put it out this is "one of the most exciting health books"

The Telomere Effect is a fascinating blend of cutting-age science and lifestyle coach. The science deals with the amazing world of telomeres, tiny areas at the tips of our chromosomes that determine how fast our cells age and die. But telomeres aren't some kind of immutable pre-coded devices that, once activated, can't be altered to slow the aging process. We can improve and maintain the health of our telomeres, and maximize what the authors describe as our "healthspans," the number of years of healthy living we can enjoy. While we were each dealt a particular genetic hand at birth, there are still ways we can enhance and prolong our healthspans. Some we already know about, such as diet and exercise. And it's not too late to start. The book demonstrates how changes in eating and physical activity can slow down or even reverse the aging trajectory. The authors include lots of examples and tips to help make these changes. Of equal, if not more importance, is the psychological component--the management of stress. The authors make a compelling case that telomere health can be greatly affected by relaxation, meditation, and other stress reduction techniques, truly a mind over matter phenomenon. Written simply and eloquently in language that even a liberal art major can comprehend, this is the most "understandable" science book I've ever read. It's also very empowering, because we are convincingly shown how our active choices can promote a longer and healthier life, rather than passive acquiescence in the aging process.
