no ， you can not ， It will be very difficult to adjust

Q: Does it still work even tho your not using the magnetic base? My camera says place back on base to see video?

When you set the camera up in Google Home (and you can’t set it up in Google Nest) you have to indicate you used a non Google designed mount, when you do that the camera turns on without the magnet present.

Q: Can it be mounted to any surface?

Any surface that you can attach the screws to, yes.
