I bought this to used when we have our portable AC unit installed since I can’t lower my blinds with the vent in the window. First things first. Yes it smells like plastic at first. Because it is plastic coated. The smell does go away. The heat difference was quite noticeable even while I was just holding it up. It comes with adhesive Velcro strips to hang it up. I was able to easily cut it to fit around my AC vents for a nice flush fit. This is perfect for someone who is renting and is wanting blackout or thermal covering with existing blinds. Also perfect for people who have an HOA who will call you out on anything other than blinds or curtains in the window. “NO FOIL FOR YOU!” Plus foil is ugly, works, but is ugly. It does a great job at blocking out all the light and since you can adhere it to the window frame you can make it so there are no light gaps. It is in a way cheaper and certainly easier to install than thermal curtains and a rod. It has some decent weight to it since it is a layered product. Thicker than a heavy duty plastic shower curtain. Cons: the creases are not going to come out of it over time. You will have to actively work at getting them out. I didn’t bother because it is in a back bedroom window. The adhesive Velcro sticks just fine to my metal window frame, but seems to not stick as well to the plastic of this product. Would probably be better to use a hole punch and use some hooks in addition to the Velcro. It would take some of the stress of the adhesive, and allow it to just hold the shade tight to the window. Also using hooks along the top edge would help make installation easier since the adhesive on one corner won’t hold long enough to get a second one up if you have to move your step ladder.

I ordered the 57” x 100” blackout shade in white. It arrived folded in a vacuum-sealed packaging with the silver side stuck together. It was extremely difficult to separate, and when I finally managed to peel a corner of it apart, the silver coating came off in spots. Nowhere in the description or reviews did it mention that you’d have to peel the material apart to expand it to its true size. Overall, very frustrating and not at all what I expected. It also had that plastic chemical smell when taken out of the packaging.. I returned immediately.

I live in Alaska where the sun doesn't set in the summer. Once installed, they block light beautifully, and it is easy to take them down when I want to let the sunlight in. They survived one summer with no wear and tear so I anticipate being able to use them repeatedly. These were easy to install once measured and cut, but I found measuring and cutting to be a little bit of a pain, in part because the material comes to you a bit crinkled and it likes to slide around. Plan to use a large flat surface and have something heavy to hold corners down while you measure. Also make sure to follow the install directions for the velcro adhesives, doing that will make using the velcro to open them up much easier. I screwed up the adhesive on a few and I was pulling the whole velcro thing off the window.
