Americans might not be ready for the salt, but this is pure old fashioned licorice.
I was talking to my neighbor the other day about how it's impossible to find real licorice anymore, which prompted me to hunt down a bag to share with him. He's an older guy and almost seemed to have a tear in his eye with an ear to ear smile across his face on the first try. "That's the old fashioned licorice!" He didn't mind the salt, although he'd never had that before. I have a thing about ammonia and if you're sensitive too you might note a mild aftertaste from the salmiak, but it's mild and you don't notice it doing down. If you love licorice, this is definitely something to add to your experiences.

I need a bigger bag...
...because I keep telling myself that I'll make one of these last a bit but I end up eating them way too quickly. If you're a fan of nordic salty licorice this is the real deal. Some of the others I've tried don't have the salmiak flavor or go too light on the salt but this one hits the right notes!

The best yet
Oh, that there would be a plus plus. Favorite licorice so far -- we'll definitely be having this for a treat when the world's burdens get too heavy to be borne ...

Best of 26 purchases: Heksehyl Zout, Scotty Dogs, Crows & Gustaf’s Beehive.
I like licorice and recently tried to broaden my horizons using Amazon to purchase 26 varieties of licorice: black/flavored, soft/hard, American/Aussie/New Zealand/Dutch/Finnish, salmiak/not salmiak. Two stand out: Gimbal’s Scotty Dogs & Crows (black). Both are major brands with Gimbal’s offering a red strawberry flavor as well. Crows are the black flavor from “Dots” you used to buy at the movie house, but became popular enough to spin-off.Crows is a CRAZY value @ 43 cents an ounce – many of the “gourmet” brands exceed $1 per ounce. Gimbal’s is 79 cents in comparison. If you like exploring our Scandinavian cousins prefer a salty variation – salmiak, which ranges from interesting to “no way”. Worth trying though as it is common – Heksehyl Zout works (10 oz for $8.39).The Dutch have several variations but one I like is Gustaf’s Beehive Licorice – 5 oz bag for $5.60 on Amazon. Firm texture to savor which slowly releases a pleasant “honey” accent to the traditional black licorice taste.Amazon makes international licorice exploration easy & cheap with lots of brands including: Darrell Lea, Panda, Sweet Gourmet, Katjes, Backroad Country, Kenny’s, Fruidies, Happy Bites, RJ’s, Licorice.com - plus my personal favs Crows & Scotty Dogs.

Not for everyone
Texture was soft and chewy, the middle had a flavor that reminded me of molasses. The flavor of black licorice was subtle with a pleasant saltiness. I deduct points though because it had an aftertaste similar to windex. The astringent/ chemically taste went up my nose the way wasabi does :(
