Zatanna by Paul Dini (New Edition)

I really liked the story and a majority of the artwork. I think it's funny how Zatanna says words/phrases backwards and makes the magic happen. Highly recommend for fans of DC, comics with magic, or Zatanna.

I always wondered what someone like Zatanna did when she was not showing up in superhero stories. This compilation answers that and so much more!It does a wonderful job of explaining Zatanna’s life as a magical superhero and it peppers in stories that include inferences of her childhood and family, giving the reader enough information to understand her character and motivations fully.I was reading this on kindle unlimited, but I have become such a fan that I will go and buy a physical copy now. In other words, this is definitely worth a read if you are into superheroes or just awesome badass female heroes!!

There are a variety of stories in this compilation of Zatanna episodes. It doesn't get too dark, but might've done if written under the DC Vertigo banner. As it is, this collection of Zatanna focuses on balancing her professional career with random mystical incidents or targeted attacks upon herself. There are a few scattered cameos from other DC characters, but nothing significant. I found this collection entertaining because I like the character, but some readers will crave more serious threats from the likes of the Justice League Dark stories.

Many others have already provided a deep review so I'll just say that I truly enjoyed this collection. I missed the run when it came out and this book gave me all the enjoyment I otherwise would have missed. Bottom line: if you are a Zatanna fan you want this book. You get great insight into the character. You wonderful storytelling and artwork. It is a compelling narrative without all the superhero noise/destruction/etc. It is a great overall package you will revisit time and time again. Treat yourself to a quality experience. I've never read full Zatanna stories before, this is really good especially if you know anything about magic as entertainment as well as fantasy fiction, I don't want to give spoilers but I will say Paul Dini with his background in stage magic as well as being a great writer sets the tone for this series, fun, exiting, surprising, and a lot of fun to read, a good introduction to a great character and I will definitely be reading more ... annataZ si eht tselooC!!!

I prefer darker novels but I found Zatanna, this interesting homo maji, I couldn't resist. This chaotic good character was fun and powerful, a unique combo and the stories are clever. Loved the over the top, brighter animation. Really enjoyed the cover art throughout.

Okay, I use this collection a lot in my fanfic writing because it gives a really good base of Zee and her personality and powers, so if you are looking for a useful feel of our favorite magician this is a great book for you. Read each story a few times to really enjoy all the little details of her. I found like in all collections like this, some artists are more cartoony, not a fan of Rick Mays here, but the more realistic and traditional artists that make up the majority of the volume really do a beautiful job at capturing her grace and power, my favorites being Cliff Chiang, Jamal Igle, Jesus Saiz. The stories themselves are fun and interesting, with those neat spins that make her world so intriguing, the intersection of the ordinary and the magical. I like how she is portrayed, sometimes temperamental and wickedly accurate in handing out justice but mostly genuinely kind, hard working, and swift thinking. She is one of the most human feeling supers out there and her stories depict both the crazy cosmic stuff heroes take on as well as the very ordinary crap and dull common stuff everyone endures. One of my favorite things is how she uses her brains, her physical skills, her years of experiences, and her powers together to deal with her problems rather than rely only upon her magic access. It makes her feel like what a real magician would actually be like. Glamour and climatic balancing out with ordinary and personal. The stage and everything behind it, to give a sense of wholeness to her. I really recommend you get this volume if you want a good realistic sense of Zee as a real feeling person.

The stories were fun and I discovered new great artists. What else can you ask ? Recommended for new and old fans
