I typically wear an xl in standard shirts, but i want a little more room. Should i go down a size for big and tall?

Check the size chart. I normally wear an XLT, but find the Wranglers sizing a bit skimpy, however, it _is_ true to what is in the chart.

what is the depth of the pocket? can pocket hold a cell phone and button the pocket?

Depth of pocket = 5" Button x 5" wide; 6" unbutton x 5" wide. Can not hold cell phone (button).

Would this shirt work well for welders?

42 years with many welding processes, 100% cotton twill will arrest flames and USUALLY protect from burns, even dual/core wire. Users experience will make the difference. i have 49 in waist, chest, any ideas on whats the best fit, with a little give for an undershirt please?

3XL was the size I wore when my waist size was a 44 and I had a rather large belly. I believe a 4XL should be just fine. 3XL will not give that room you want. I like wearing my shirts in my pants, if so a tall will help a lot if you also wear your shirts in your pants.
