Worth knowing: This popular shade and temple tree is a member of the mahagony family (to which the neem also belongs) and one cannot imagine Mediterranean city parks in southern Europe without it. The tree is a fast-growing and undemanding plant. With its pinnate leaves, it develops into a beautiful tub plant, up to 2 metres in height, also within our regions. Specimens growing above 2 metres sheltered from wind tolerate a maximum temperature of -12°C. The violet flowers, which appear in spring, have the fragrance of lilac. The plant is also known under the name paternoster tree, Pride of India or pearl tree.

Origin: The origin of this plant lies in India, Himalayan. It has been naturalized throughout southern Europe.

Propagation: Leave the very hard, pea-sized seeds to soak in water at room temperature for about 24 hours and put them 1 cm deep into moist cultivation soil afterwards. Keep evenly moist and as warm as possible (20°-25°C). The seeds germinate mostly after 3-5 weeks.

Place / Light: A partially shaded to full sunny position is ideal.

Care: Tub plant soil is suitable as a planting medium. Good garden soil, mixed with coarse sand and little stones is suitable when transplanting the plant. Water plenty during the growing period and supply the plant with tub plant fertilizer every 3 weeks.

Winter period: Tub plants can be left outside until the end of October and should spend the winter in the house or in an unheated winter garden (5°-10°C). Little trees that have been transplanted require a winter protection, e.g. coconut mattings. They do, however, tolerate light sub-zero temperatures. The chinaberry tree sheds its leaves during winter and needs a resting period.
