Hello what type of battery does this device take.

Its powered (via a mains power supply) or via a 12v battery (not supplied) such as car battery. Either way its a waste of time as this thing doesn't work - The only way this would work is if you threw the thing at them.... But not recommend as that would be cruel and probably illegal in your jurisdiction!

Does this deter crows

Definately not. It's 50 50 with rats and mice, so I would not recommend for birds, especially the intelligent crow.

Can you use this without it being plugged in and therefore can it be charged up to use without being plodded in?

Mine only works when plugged in; it has no battery system.
