Review: Great overall book - Bought this for my autistic brother and it’s been a great choice. The repetitive text and rhythm make it easy and enjoyable to follow, and the illustrations really help keep his attention. It’s a fun, comforting story that works well for shared reading. A timeless book that’s suitable for all ages. Review: Excellent book - Another brilliant story by Julia Donaldson.

Ok book
Images are good but the book jumps quite a lot between story references so didn't hold my sons interest.

Another excellent book by Julia Donaldson. I am a childminder for children ranging in age from 3-6years. I find that it is a bit too complex for the 3/4 year olds, however the 5/6 year old 'get' it. The illustrations are beautiful and very detailed, but a bit too 'finicky' for the younger kids. The story is multi-layered, which the older ones 'get' and find very amusing, but it goes over the heads of the younger ones. The characters are fleeting - I have been asked a number of times "But where's 'such&such' gone?" by the smallies. The repetition, typical of Julia Donalsdon's books, changes just as the children get into the swing of it, which the younger kids find a bit frustrating, BUT the older kids get a kick out of the surprise. It's a book the older kids look for often but the younger ones hardly at all. However, I think it's good to expose children to more complex storytelling from an early age. With that in mind, I would suggest that if you're only starting your young children's library/bookshelf then opt for some of Donaldson's other offerings as you will get far more use out of them. If you are extending a decent collection and wanting to push your children's focus and attention-spans, then this is a great book. I'm still giving it 5 stars, because it IS a wonderful book, for the right target audience. Charlie Cook Favourite book is, in fact, one of MY favourite children's books!

If you have young children and don't have a collection of Julia Donaldson books you are missing out. Charlie Cook is not my favourite of her books (Snail and the Whale takes top honours) but it's still top notch. They are a pleasure to read out loud with their lyrical and lilting prose.
