Mercado, Producer Mark Swift, Editor James Ryan and Head of Story Heidi Jo Gilbert Review: A very welcoming surprise of a gem! - As a fan of the first two Shrek films, it's been frustrating to see the sequels and the one spin-off being unable to live up to the greatness of those two movies. For the longest time, I thought it was the Terminator or Alien case, where the first two movies are great, and the rest are trash. Even when I saw the trailer for The Last Wish, I wasn't impressed and thought it would at best be a decent film but one that wasn't worth watching on the big screen. But, oh boy, was I so wrong! Puss In Boots: The Last Wish is not just a good film, it's a true worthy follow-up to the first two movies. In fact, you could easily watch the first two and just skip to this film without needing to know what happens in the other three films that came between Shrek 2 and Last Wish (in terms of release). This one has heart and a very appealing story. I won't bother you with the premise, that's what desertcart's description is for. So, let's dive straight into what makes this movie great. First off, Puss is a far more interesting character in this movie. I still love him in Shrek 2 and how we are introduced to him. But this movie dives far more deeper into his character and shows us his vulnerability. His attempt to reclaim his 9 nines really shows us the side of him he wishes to keep hidden. And his confrontation with a new villain (a wolf) really brings out his fears and insecurities for the very first time. It's some interesting stuff to see, while still not emasculating Puss in the process. He's still a great character with three-dimensional aspects of him. The animation is noticeably different but in a good way. It looks great and has an anime vibe, especially with the fight sequences. You can tell that there are different styles going on, but they never overshadow or feel out of place. The music as well is decent. But what makes this movie shine is in its characters. Only Puss and Softpaws are back, played by their original voiceactors. But we get new additions like The Wolf, Goldilocks and the Three Bears of Crime, Big Jack Horner, and my personal favorite character of this movie, Perrito. Perrito is my favorite because he's just a likable character and so simple. His cheery and naiveness attitude is what makes this him stand out among the more serious characters. Although, he does have a rather dark and disturbing backstory that is kinda hilarious in how he tells it. I won't spoil it here, but you should definitely watch the movie to know what I'm talking about. There is also a bit of subtly with his character as well. There are times when I'm curious if he's not entirely aware of the harsh reality surrounding him or if he bottles it all inside to keep himself from falling apart. Perrito also serves as the comedic relief of the film, without compromising the serious moments. The rest of the characters serve a purpose and have their own arcs as well. Goldilocks' isn't very deep but it's emotional and makes the character interesting enough beyond the stereotype of being a villain. Big Jack Horner is interesting as well, although he's really just there to be an obstacle. It's not really a flaw because he still serves a purpose and acts as the opposite side of Goldilocks and Puss. But the one character that surprised me the most was the introduction of The Wolf. A somewhat major villain of the story, although he's more of an obstacle for Puss to fight against. I won't spoil it here, but DreamWorks did a great job in making The Wolf a far more terrifying villain who isn't there just to be a big bad guy for Puss to fight against. He fits in with Puss' story-arc and DreamWorks somehow managed to make one of the best animated villains I've seen in a long time. This 2nd spin-off film of Puss In Boots has no right to be as good as it is, yet I'm happy that it is. Sometimes life just throws you a bone in the most unlikely of places, and The Last Wish is one of them. The story is great, the characters are great, the animation is great, and the film itself is just a great time to watch, especially with family. I give this film an 8/10 and a worth owning on Bluray/DVD rating. Review: One of the best animated movies ever made, peroid. - After seeing a bunch of short clips and comments and making of's on the new puss in Boots movie: The Last Wish, I was super intrigued. It looked dark as hell, incredibly well animated, and extremely stylized- taking a lot of cues from Spiderverse. I just went and saw it, and damn does it live up to those promises. Incredible animation, solid story, great writing. I don't know why somebody at DreamWorks decided to go so hard on this movie, but I thank them and the whole team for it. This is a huge sleeper hit of 2022 And the wolf is one of the scariest characters done in a so called "kids movie" Note to parents: I was asked by a friend, would a 4 year old be scared by it? I would bet money on it. Would it give them nightmares? Probably. But it also has a very strong message in it and I think it's good for kids to see those things. it's important for parents to make their own decisions, but also important to not be upset at an animated "kids" movie for pushing darker themes. Animation doesn't mean only light hearted themes. When I was younger I watched some DARK movies. The Neverending story, All Dogs go to heaven, Secret of NIMH come to mind. I don't know how old I was when I saw them, but they all left a permeant impact on my memory and life. Each one of those movies uses it's darkness to strengthen it's message about light, and I think they helped shape me. The light matters more when you had to fight through the dark to see it! Creates value.

Excellent standalone film, great video quality
The movie itself had garnered a flood of positive hype, so despite not having checked in on the Shrekiverse since the original film in 2001, I took a risk on buying the BluRay. I say "risk", but it cost the same as two tickets to go see it in the theater. Despite having limited experience with the Shrek lore, I found this film stood on its own. I was amazed to learn later that Kitty Softpaws was actually a character in a previous movie. Her introduction in this movie was so efficient, natural, and complete that I was sold on her and Puss' backstory by the time a major revelation about them occurs. The film lived up to the hype: well written and expertly paced, it was charming and evocative with healthy doses of humor and humanity. The visual style took advantage of the animated medium, delivering an experience I've seen other liken to "Into the Spiderverse". Whereas that movie's visual style can be overwhelming at points, this one's visuals provide a vibrant backdrop that complements the story without drowning it out. Those visuals are beautifully rendered in 4K. The clarity of even the individual hairs of the characters is wonderful. Sound quality is good as well. I've only watched it with the TV's onboard audio, but nothing is jumping out as problematic. Performances are excellent across the board. Banderas delivers Puss' bombast with as much fidelity as his vulnerability or his resignation. Hayek doesn't get the same opportunities to show range, but her performance gives Kitty life and weighs it with just the right amount of pathos to keep her from feeling like a one-dimensional character.
