Best boots I've ever used
I purchased these boots in July 2024 with high expectations after learning about them from a YouTube channel named "Rose Anvil." What stood out to me was the story behind these boots, the use of quality materials & craftsmanship, durability & most importantly comfort. This is a boot that is used by African Rangers to protect wildlife from poachers. To me, a mainly city dwelling individual, I figured if it's good enough for a Ranger then it's definitely good enough for me. For sizing reference, I normally wear a US size 9.5 for sneakers and other boots, I chose the US size 9 for the African Rangers and it fits like a glove. Try wearing a half size down from what you normally wear and note that the boot will be a little more spacious after a break-in period. The first week of wearing this boot was brutal, I went into this purchase knowing that leather boots require a break-in period, the fresh leather needs to conform to your feet. I was very close to returning the boots as I had never experienced blisters on my heel from footwear previously. I recommend wearing a patch to protect your heel during the first 1-2 weeks. After a brief break which allowed my heels to recover, I gave this pair another chance and that is when everything changed for the better. I have used these boots daily and for a variety of environments. From the concrete jungle of the city and variety of terrains in the wilderness during my hikes. In each situation these boots kept me comfortable and confident to walk in any condition. The leather has its unique patina growing from my many miles that I have placed starting from July until my posting of this review in September, and as such is gaining character. I have received many compliments for my boots. Something of note is that the Fudge variation of this boot is a suede leather (As pictured in first image) , I wasn't aware of this and while it is a handsome look I personally prefer the more traditional darker tone smooth leather (As pictured in the third image). To achieve the desired look and to maintain these boots, I purchased the "JIM GREEN All Natural Leather Balm Footwear Care Kit for Leather Hiking Boots" which I applied after cleaning the boot with soap & water and a horse hairbrush. This balm was applied by finger and rubbed into the leather, which is a labor of love, however it smooths out the suede and gives it the classic darker brown leather look while also protecting the boot. After three months of heavy usage, the tread shows minimal wear. Due to the construction of this boot resoling in the distant future will be a sinch with a local cobbler and I do plan to wear these boots for as long of a life as they give me. I'd like to thank the folks at Jim Green for their excellent product at a fair price and will be purchasing their other products going forward. I am a very satisfied customer.

Stylish and Rugged - size 10
These are the african ranger boot, size 10, fudge color. I’ve only had them a few hours, so here’s my first impressions: fits a lot like a Dr. Marten or Keene. Toe box is roomy, and my toes can sprawl. I don’t have a particularly wide foot, but shoes that pinch my toes to a point drives me bonkers. These do not feel too wide to me, as I appreciate the toe space, but I can see how someone who isn’t use to this shoe style could be caught off guard. The size feels spot on for length. I wear a 9 1/2 to 10 1/2 depending on brand. 10 is my most common shoe size and these feel perfect in that regard. I don’t feel any high centering in the footbed like Ive read from a few other reviews. These feel durable. The leather is thick and smells good. I think these ooze with style and are going to look great as a style shoe for fall. The green laces pop. The only thing I need to wait and check after break in is the collar. It sits height wise between the size of a standard work boot and a sneaker. Somewhere in the middle. I feel some rubbing going up and down stairs. Im wearing thick socks to help. I think as the leather softens it won’t be a problem, but we shall see. Also, the footbed is pretty minimal. I’ve read that some people recommend an upgraded insole. That’s not immediately obvious to me. So I will wear them a bit and decide. Needless to say, these are keepers for me. Perhaps my new favorite shoe. Update: 10/29/24 - These are still amazing boots. The collar broke in and I'm not having any problems with rubbing. I've added mink oil to condition these and help them break in and it darkened the color. Still looks great. I also don't feel the need for a shoe insole. The bed isn't particularly soft, but it seems to be molding to my foot shape which is a good sign. Very comfortable. My favorite shoe purchase in quite some time.

Jim Green is the good stuff
I bought these in Nov 19 2024 as a reference of time I used them. That are by far the most comfortable shoe/boot I own. Took about a week to break in. I’ve used from job site to hiking to camping trips. I have around 1000-1200 miles on them , they are holding up great. I only used Obenauf’s Heavy duty LP , to treat and hydrate them.I would 100% recommend to anyone who want a good all around boot. Sizing was perfect , it has a very wide toe box which is perfect for my feet. The sole was nice and grippy and soft. It’s about 300-500 miles from needing a replacement. These are 10/10 from me. (In the picture you can a treated and non treated after some hard use on trails and 3 job sites)

Comfort and quality
After comparing boots across many styles and intended functions, I landed on these boots due to the design and look. Quite often, the description of boots didn’t align with the look of the boot and I felt like this was perfect when reading the boots description and seeing how well these boots are made. Other reviews mentioned a break in period that I did not experience after unboxing my pair. I conditioned them with Howard’s leather salve and immediately achieved a more supple and flexible feel. I had tried them on “raw” right out of the box, but after working multiple layers of the salve into the boots, I achieved very comfortable wearability. There were a few minor hot spots where the boot was tight, particularly down the front of my ankle, but these faded away quickly and I had no problems with minimal wear. The tongue is thick and I’d recommend deliberate placement the first four or five wearing to trim it into laying flat. The quality of the leather is very good and, again differing from some of the reviews that mentioned a strong odor, I did not experience any negative odor or aroma. Leather is thick and has a smooth surface when box new. I’m now a month in. Had one minor scuff near the toe that was easily remedied with more leather salve. I finding I can clean/dust the boots with an aggressive microfiber cleaning cloth to get any surface dirt off both the leather, the laces, and the soles. Of note is that I am not polishing the boots to achieve shine, rather I’m conditioning for protection and water resistance. After wearing real “combat” boots during a career in the US Army of 20 years , I can realistically place the Jim Green Ranger boots very high on the quality and durability scale of all the boots I’ve owned. They are wider in the toe box than my other boots and I had to deliberately place my feet center on pedals for both my automatic and manual vehicles, but I’m now accustomed to the size and there is no longer any extra thought involved. Update 10 April 2025 - They continue to wear in. I really appreciate that they have molded well to my feet. More minor self imposed scratches that very easily are handled by the Howard’s Leather Salve. We’ve had some ridiculous pollen of late… found that a microfiber cloth and gentle pressure gets most of the surface and with the cloth wrapped around one finger, I can easily clean the laces and point where the sole is sewn on. I stripped out some parachute cord and used shrink tubing to make a second and third pair of laces. Still very pleased and contemplating my next set of Jim Greens. I highly recommend.

Good boots; could be better.
The Good: 1. Uppers are a few big pieces of thick, real leather: not small pieces of thin leather sewn onto fabric. 2. Comfortable & easy breakin. 3. Lots of room in the toe box. 4. The leather lining is simply the reverse side of the outer leather uppers. 5. Stitching is neat & construction appears solid. 6. Not quite full Goodyear welt construction, but boots appear readily resoleable. 7. No Goretex lining so breathes better & dries faster. The Bad: 1. The lacing hooks are steel, already rusting, & need to be replaced w/ brass eyelets/grommets ASAP. 2. There is no cork or other moldable insole to conform to wearer's foot (existing insole is merely thick, heavy slab of rubber). 3. Tongue was coated w/ tacky substance making lacing adjustment difficult. Conclusion: These are unpretentious boots: designed and made for durability & hard work. Sadly, defective lacing hooks are rusting after less than 2 months & must be replaced ASAP before the rust ruins the leather (ideally w/ brass grommets). If the hooks are timely replaced, with proper care I expect to be wearing these boots for many years.

Solid casual shoes. Seem to handle hot climate well.
These are true to size, I'm between 12.5 and 13, and 13.5 were a bit spacious overall. The fit is somewhat unusual: The toebox, contrary to what you may think from the pics, isn't too wide at all: it's barely wide enough for my 3E feet, while being 1/2 size larger. Almost to the point where I'd want an extra 2-3mm. The heel box on the other hand is very generous, so my heels wobble freely sidewise, despite any adjustments to lacing. They do sit comfortably around the ankle -- snug, but no excessive pressure or soreness whatsoever. The upper leather is soft and didn't require any break-in. They felt like plush slippers, right out of the box. These have almost no sole padding of any kind. The first few walks on hard pavement were painful. Caused me to reconsider my interest in the barefoot version. Otoh, for the same reason, walking on grass and mud is quite pleasant. For what it's worth, I've walked in them for a few days in dry 90-95F weather, and my feet were very comfortable in terms of heat/breathability. Which I guess is to be expected of shoes made in Africa. Finally, steel shank = potential extra attention during airport security check.

My dogs ain't barking, they're leaping for joy.
Just got my pair, wore them around the neighborhood and instantly knew I made the right choice. Solid construction, good quality, and more comfortable than I thought they would be. In terms of looks, the rounded toe box takes getting used to but I understand the function of it so its not a dealbreaker, not by a country mile. Just ordered Jim Green's leather balm to get this puppies ready for prime time. Absolutely beyond happy with my purchase. I might get a second pair to rotate them out, albeit in a different color. They fit great, they feel greater. I love what the company does supporting African Rangers and the important work they do. Thanks Jim Green, you got a convert to your amazing greatness of footwear excellence!

I really wanted to like these boots.
After hearing about the “incredible” build quality of these boots, I decided I needed a pair for work. I’m a carpenter, so when I’m not on my feet, I’m down on my knees, dragging my toes along the ground, wearing out boot leather at an accelerated rate. For that reason, the leather toe cap really appealed to me. I bought a pair back in February, and I’ve been wearing them almost every day ever since. I brush cleaned them every week, and oiled them as necessary to maintain the moisture of the leather. I normally order a size 12 in work boots, but due to the low profile toe box, I needed a 12.5 for the correct fit. The bad: 1. Worthless insoles 2. The lining fabric in the toe box began to tear out within two months. I removed this with a pocket knife, which isn’t ideal, but at least it wasn’t bunching up around my toes. 3. Also within the first two months, the midsole began to delaminate from the leather upper. This is mostly just aesthetically unappealing, because the stitch down construction continues to hold the boot together, even when the glue fails, but I really feel this shouldn’t have happened so soon. 4. The outsole is very thin under the ball of the foot. After days spent on concrete, I really feel it. 5. Within 6 months, the midsole began to separate from the outsole at the toe. It has currently peeled back about 1/4”. The good: great quality leather, true dual thickness toe cap, initial comfort (after new insoles), outsoles are soft enough to be grippy even without much tread, leather has worn very well. I will NOT be buying these again.
