I got a real kick out of this book, which really rang true. My grandparents emigrated from Sweden to the U.S. in the late 1800s and had lots of kids, including my dad, who were all raised with these quirky characteristics. My grandparents, my dad and his siblings were all wonderful, salt of the earth, dedicated family people, but were not demonstrative to the point of near-panic when being hugged--very Swedish. I was really disappointed, however, that there was no mention in this book of lutefisk, considered a delicacy and traditionally served as Christmas dinner. You start with a hunk of dried codfish (possibly available in the U.S. only in Minnesota and the Dakotas) and reconstitute it by boiling it into a smelly, gelatinous white glob that is then served with all white accoutrements including boiled potatoes with white cream gravy, lefse (tasteless dried flatbread) and rice pudding. The author did, however, capture the essence of another type of smelly, slimey preserved fish delicacy, of which there are many disgusting varieties--so I will forgive him for omitting the lutefisk. And IKEA really does capture the essence of all things Swedish: spare, angular, practical, and no-nonsense. You can buy those little red horses there too.

A light read which walks one through a number of Swedish stereotypes which, if adhered to, promise to turn one into a real Svensson. One can tell that English is not the author's native tongue due to a few grammar/spelling errors and occasional awkward syntax; but I appreciate the author's willingness to write in English for those of us who have no fluency in Swedish and have lost much of our command of German. The author also maintains a blog about Sweden which I think I will frequent.

I am a dual Swedish & American citizen. Living in the US, I must keep sharing my Swedish heritage with my kids. I bought this book for my daughter before she attended a camp in Sweden. It was an easy read and I found myself smiling as I read. Swedish traditions/customs are special and I think he covered all of them very well. My daughter is reading the book now. Thank you for creating this book!

Only took me 3 light sessions of reading to get through the book but as a person who is very interested in emigrating to Sweden some day it came with a lot of culture tips that I won't totally have to learn the embarrassing way.

I found this book to be a great re-introduction on moving to Sweden. I’ve traveled and lived in Scandinavia before and I remember feeling wrong-footed by all the awkwardness - I wish I’d had this primer on my first time. Yes, it will feel awkward regardless of where you came from, but that’s ok - and it’s worth it!

This book is perfect for just for those who simply love Sweden to those who are traveling and or potentially moving there . It is simply an amazing read and has great tips .

Goodwill Minnesota listed this book as in "Like New" condition. It had doodles and underlining on many pages, and worse, the six pages on the sex habits of Swedes were CUT OUT! The seller offered me a refund, but what good would that do?As to the book itself, it is poorly written, with many terms used before they are defined (or not defined at all), no pronunciation guidance, and annoying repetition.Still, I hope the book will be useful in picking up Swedish women. I plan to hold it as though reading it, catch their attention and start a conversation. Wish me luck.

I loved this book. 55 lessons on ‘How to be Swedish’. As other reviews mentioned, the English edition needs a proofreader but don’t be put off. The book is a lighthearted look at Swedish culture and it’s very very funny!

Seit etwa 15 Jahren reise ich mehrmals im Jahr nach Schweden und verbringe dort regelmässig den Sommer-, Oster- oder Herbsturlaub. Auch verschiedene Dienstreisen führten mich schon nach Schweden. Da man auf seinen Reisen zunehmend in Kontakt zu den Menschen in Schweden kommt und da ich inzwischen auch die Schwedische Sprache ganz leidlich beherrsche bestellte ich mir diesen "Guide to Swedishness in 55 steps", um weiteres über die Menschen und über das Leben in Schweden zu erfahren. Ich möchte zwar nicht auswandern, finde es aber schön wenn man auch im Urlaub oder im Beruf mehr Verständnis für sein Gegenüber hat.Vorweg gesagt, das Buch trifft die schwedische Mentalität sehr gut. Es ist in 55 Abschnitte eingeteilt und in jedem Abschnitt wird eine Besonderheit bzw. eine typische Verhaltensweise in Schweden beleuchtet. Natürlich kann man nicht alle Schweden über einen Kamm scheren und ein solche Beschreibung eines ganzen Volksstammes kommt häufig nicht ohne die Bedienung von Klischees aus. Dennoch beschreibt das Buch "die Schweden" und deren Leben eigentlich ganz gut.Das Buch hat insgesamt 157 Seiten und weist ein Format von etwa 12,5 x 20 cm auf. Das Gewicht beträgt ca. 150 Gramm und ist damit eingermassen Rucksacktauglich für die Reise.Ich möchte nicht alle 55 Kapitel aufzählen, sonst würde ich ja den Inhalt komplett vorweg nehmen.Aber es wird sehr treffend auf die allgemeine Begrüssungsformel unter Schweden ("Hej", Kapitel 1), auf das Schlange stehen mit Ticket (Kapitel 8) eingegangen. Für die Biertrinker gibt es ein eigenes Kapitel mit der Klassifizierung der verschiedenen Biersorten (Lattöl, Folköl, Starköl, Kapitel 17) sowie deren unterschiedlichen Alkoholgehalte. Aber es gibt auch praktische Tips für Auswanderer z.B. wie man seine Identifikationsnummer erhält (Kapitel 30) bzw. wie die schwedische Gesundheitsvorsorge funktioniert (Kapitel 31). Für das Berufsleben werden die flachen Hierarchien beschrieben (Kapitel 21), die aber nicht nur in den Firmen sondern im alltäglichen Umgang zwischen den Menschen zu finden sind. Schliesslich gibt es in Schweden nur selten die Ansprache per "Sie", alltäglich ist in diesem Land das "Du", auch z.B. zwischen Chef und Hausmeister.Tatsächlich gibt es sogar noch ein Bonuskapitel, den Inhalt herauszufinden möchte ich hier aber lieber dem Leser überlassen.Eines muss dem Leser aber klar sein: das Buch ist durchweg in einfach und verständlich gehaltenem Englisch geschrieben. Das dürfte für die meisten Schweden-Reisenden kein Hindernis sein, es sollte aber erwähnt werden. Vereinzelt werden die passenden Schwedischen Begriffe eingeflochten (z.B. Kapitel 7 "Speak Swedish") aber für mein Gefühl hätten durchaus ein paar mehr schwedische Worte eingebaut werden können.Alles in allem ist das Buch also ein wirklich guter Ratgeber für Schweden-Urlauber und -Auswanderer, das ich wirklich empfehlen kann. Und das obwohl ich aufgrund meiner Sorge um die Bedienung landestypischer Klischees zunächst doch eher skeptisch war.
