High schooler gains independence
According to my dyslexic daughter "The C-pen exam reader is great!" She doesn't use her dominant hand when using the C-pen, allowing her to slow down and follow along with a sentence, limiting mistakes. If she goes fast and is not following the line exactly, then the C-pen has a hard time reading. The controls are very easy to use, changing between left and right-handed or American vs British accents. With the exam reader, she uses her reader on exams, homework, class work, and SAT prep course. The C-pen allows her to be more independent by not having to ask for help with reading. My daughter is in high school and it was important to provide her with the tools she will need to be successful going forward, therefore, we found it is worth the money (for us).

Doesn’t power up
It worked great for one month. Then it would never power back on. Waste of money. Very disappointed and yes I tried all the troubleshooting and nothing worked!

First Impressions - good tool for homework independence
Update: there is a downside. The device is easily confused. You have to practice holding and scanning to get the speed and accuracy you want. It does not work well with small type or any extraneous characters like underlines. It's kind of frustrating, so my kid will use it for simple, short worksheets for now.Basic, easy-to-use text reader. My 6th grader with profound dyslexia is using it for reading homework worksheet instructions to him. The voice speed and volume is adjustable. British or American accent.Pros: my kid think it "looks cool and high tech", which means he'll use it. Uses headphones or pen speaker. Lightweight, fits in kid's hand. No complicated functions. It's just a reader, not dictionary or recorder or other things on more sophisticated pens.-1 point because it takes some practice to scan, have to avoid things like underlines or symbols that can throw it off. It takes a bit of practice.

Font size is crucial for accuracy.
My 10 yo has a visual/neuro disability that interferes with reading ability. The c-pen exam is a simple, well designed tool for her to use in class rather than her needing constant oral administration from another individual. The voice is much more natural than anticipated and versus other audio devices we have used. The feature to repeat a sentence rather than having to rescan has been extremely useful to her, as well.Of course, her classmates thought it was the coolest thing ever. Thankfully, she doesn't feel like it makes her a target for teasing. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is because the font-size reading capability is more limiting than I had hoped. As she promotes to higher grade levels, font size decreases and some "large print" options are almost too big for the reader. Not all, but some. I understand the pen is expected to have some limitations but I almost wonder if we just happen to be in the sweet spot of font sizes. Hopefully she will be able to use it for a few years before the font is to small for the pen to read accurately and without mixing words from other sentences. Overall, we truly are grateful for this pen.

It does take a little practice to learn how to best scan, and occasionally it misreads a word
A couple of my middle school students with dyslexia have been using this pen, and it has been very helpful. It does take a little practice to learn how to best scan, and occasionally it misreads a word, but it works well most of the time. You can set it for right-handed (left to right) scanning or left-handed (right to left) scanning, and you can adjust the speed. It will scan English and Spanish. If a student doesn't have the option of getting an electronic version of a document where they can highlight text and then use text-to-speech technology to have it "read" to them, then this is a very workable solution. Our middle school aged students don't appear to be overly frustrated by it.

Great looking, light weight
Just got this yesterday so will update later. Great looking, light weight, and easy to use. Teen dyslexic is impressed with the practice scanning she did. We like that you can change the voice between American and British; allows for a more personal experience. Seems to get the majority of the text; didn't go well on her handwriting, but that's not why we bought it. Hoping it will help with worksheets, notes, and reports. Probably not great to read a book, especially with so many of the books on audio anyways. I will be adding it to her 504 for use in class and with the headphones, she won't interrupt the class. The price is on the high side, but it is an investment. I'm sure every teen has a phone, which costs 2 times this, but this helps with the "important" stuff.

Not easy to use for someone with impairments
Well made. My husband has had massive stroke and can no longer read. Got this for him to be able to read again. It's not easy to figure it out for him. I had to work with it myself to help him. Text to speech is not as fluid as it should be . Hard to understand reading single lines at a time for someone who has to listen slowly to understand. Not impressed with this product at all. We will keep trying to get the hang of it for a few days, but looking like we will be sending it back.
