Fabulous Book!! Great quilts, projects, photography, illustrations and more!
When I learned that Tula Pink had a book in the works I was instantly excited. It was October at Quilt Market and I even was so excited that Rachel & I took a photo in front of the cover. I wasn't sure what to expect from the book, but had to get it since I am Tula's biggest fan. The book was released in March. {I guess the decided to change the cover.} I like them both, but the quilt on the original cover is my favorite. This book is more than quilts. It contains 10 quilt patterns and 10 sewing projects. The photography is stunning. The feel of the paper and the printing is also very nice. I have a very large book collection & appreciate a well made book! This photo alone made me want to go live with Tula in her old house in Missouri. I always like to take photos of quilts outside and in fun places, not just laying on a bed. One of my favorite parts of the book is Tula's education on how to pick colors for a quilt. She goes over the basics of color theory and shows lots of examples. This book is part coffee table book part quilt education. It is very easy to sit down and just get lost in it. It is a must have for any Tula Pink fan. The quilts are unique. Not all of them are my style, but I've never bought a book that has all quilts that are my style. For the price of the book vs. the price of a pattern it is more than worth the value. Normally I prefer illustrations to be simple and graphic. Tula did hand-drawn step-by-step illustrations for this book. While that isn't usually my preference it fits the style of this book, and Tula has the chops to create great hand-drawn illustrations. Sometimes hand-drawn illustrations aren't the best because bad ones can make the directions un-clear. I adore this quilt and plan on cutting into my precious Tula Pink stash to make it sometime soon. I also love this body pillow & plan on making one after Quilt Market. I'm also in love with her Houndstooth quilt. I think the idea of using a few lights and a few darks makes for an interesting pop! In addition to all the information that Tula provides, there is also a lot of information from Angela on the quilting of each quilt. Tula isn't a fan of the camera... so I found this photo of her to be very fitting! This review was originally posted on my blog. Please visit my blog to see this review with photos.[...]

Lovely book!
This is a beautiful book! Lots of tips that I don't find in every quilting book, very tempting patterns, and it's very readable. I recommend it highly.

I, too, Could Have Lived Without This One
After seeing the author on television, I ordered this book. I liked the beanstalk quilt, and loved the houndstooth quilt that Tula demonstated on "Sewing with Nancy". I thought there would be more quilt designs that were inventive inside this book. But there were only eight additional quilt patterns, and none appealed to me. None were inspiring, just free style rotary cutting strip designs. The title is QUILTS from the house of Tula Pink, but half of the book is piddily little craft projects, like embroidering a star on a lampshade or making a sketchbook cover. If you like Anthropologie, you will enjoy this slim volume. If you don't know what Anthropologie is, it will disappoint. Also, I have concerns regarding the durability of some of her construction methods. Learn to quilt properly elsewhere, then consult this book for style ideas-not construction methods. Not all is lost, however. Tula's fabrics and colorways are enjoyable. I paided $10 for this book. Someday I'll use the houndstooth pattern, and the purchase of the book is proper payment for Tula's innovation with that design. But I would have felt jipped if I had paid more. I hope she tries again, and puts out another books with only quilt patterns which relies on more complex design.

Just OK
It's probably just a personal / stylistic preference - so please don't make more of only 3 stars than is necessary. (My wish is not to diminish Tula's success which appears to be formidable.) But I have many quilting books, and I frequently reference them for creative and technical ideas and for inspiration. By her own admittance, her view points and perspectives are "quirky", but the extent to which that comes out in her narrative and images doesn't resonate with me at all. (I could even say it's annoying; but many others appear to love her style.) Although I haven't had the chance to more fully dig into some of the details, and I will probably give a little more time to doing that, I did pretty quickly find a good tip, and that was to invest in a rotating cutting mat, which never occurred to me. Otherwise, I think this one will get pretty quickly relegated to the shelf, not to see the light of day very often.

This book opened my mind to completely new and innovative ways to design a quilt. It's inspiring but many of the examples are so unique and beautiful, anyone could replicate them and yet feel as if they had created the design due to all the options one can incorporate into each project. If you never felt compelled or even slightly interested in trying quilting, this is the book for you. The projects are so much fun, you will find it hard to not put together a winning result. The instructions are presented so even if you have never sewn a seam, you will be able to complete a quilt and enjoy the process with Tula Pink's help.

Where to buy your next bolt of Tula Pink Fabric...
I like this book a lot. The patterns are easy to follow for a novice quilter, she explains the definitions if needed and an overall good quilt book. Tula Pink is a wonderful designer and I am happy to have read bits n pieces about her as she goes thru this quilt book

Great Projects
I love the variety of types of quilt projects in this book. I haven't completed any just yet, but I've got the "Fairytale Lane" quilt in progress. The directions and illustrations are very clear, and I love the section of tips at the beginning! I look forward to completing this project, and many more!!
