One of the best in the series
I have always loved the Call of Duty games, but this one I felt was just brilliant. The game play was great, the graphics are spectacular and the campaign story good too. What I loved most though was the time period of World War II, It really suits this type of game and the story within the game was really well researched and executed brilliantly.

Beautiful looking, fun to play, but short and huge download required.
Call of Duty WWII takes the franchise back to it's origins, putting you in the boots of a private in a unit that lands on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, and with a campaign that takes you battling through France and into the heartland of the Reich. The campaign is a fun one as you and your best friend try to survive action after action whilst battling the German war machine, watching each others backs not just for the danger of bullets and bombs, but because your squad has a Sergeant for whom nothing ever seems good enough.Whilst most missions involve you playing the primary character battling on foot through the ruins of France, Holland, and Germany, there are various sections that either put you in vehicles of the era or are told from the perspective of other characters, such as sections where you get to drive a Jeep as you race to relieve a besieged unit, a German Mobelwagon in an attack on an armoured train, an M4 Sherman tank going up against the might of German Panzers, A P47 Thunderbolt on bomber escort duty, and a mission where you play a French resistance fighter infiltrating a German headquarters. All of the weaponry of the era - bother American and German - is represented, including the M1 Garand, Thompson sub-machine gun, Colt 1911 pistol, Browning Automatic Rifle, Panzerschreck, and MG42. You can carry any two infantry weapons at any given time.Graphically and in terms of sound and musical score the game is terrific. The cut scenes are movie level quality, and the plot gripping, although the campaign is relatively short (about eight to ten hours split over 11 missions), and the game requires a massive download of more than 50 MB with an additional 35MB update that took a frustrating three hours to complete before it will allow you to play any part of it.I'm not sure I would have considered it worth the money if I had purchased it at the original time of release, but obtaining it at this late date as I did for a very modest amount I've found it to be a game that has stood the test of time and which was well worth the purchase.

A Welcome Return to COD Excellence
COD WW2 is a welcome return to what made the series great. Gone is the irritating and supposedly futuristic wall-jumping and jet-thrusting around in favour of back to basics boots on the ground. The improvements in technology since the last WW2 shooter really shows and the imagery is fantastic, which together with convincing thuds when bombs go off around you, creates an atmosphere that you can believe in.Although I play all game modes, I tend to enjoy single player and couch co-op multiplayer the most. In WW2 single players are not ignored like in previous titles. There is a full and engaging single player campaign in which your character progresses through Normandy on D-day to the push in to Germany itself. From memory, there are about 12 chapters for the campaign and each is a decent length with enough challenges with varying difficulty levels to keep any player happy for a good while. Unless you are the type who will simply run through levels without taking in everything there is to see, you should get a good 10-14 hours out of single player which is an improvement over other recent COD offerings.A new ‘War’ mode in multiplayer almost bridges the gap between COD and Battlefield in that it offers a number of connected objectives that teams must fight to achieve. One example sees your team in a typical Normandy beach landing, fighting against the bunkers on shore to achieve certain objectives before reaching gun emplacements inshore. The other team is there to stop your advance and at ‘half-time’ the teams swap round. It’s an excellent mode and can make for some intense fire-fights.Zombies is also back with a more familiar art style to it, although again players have to work towards certain objectives as the hordes of zombies attack in waves.Graphically the entire game is excellent and in my opinion the return to WW2 is a welcome step in the right direction for the franchise. COW WW2 is far superior to the nonsense that’s been offered in recent years and I love it.I haven’t bothered with the in-game purchases which are simply designed to attract the brainless twits who are only interested in rushing to acquire the best equipment before anyone else. In multiplayer against bots, you can choose any weapon and any load-out you like from the start, and when online, all you need to do is ignore the cash cows and level up through your own experience. If you’re an offline player, none of the cash cow stuff will affect your game anyway.

Perfectly servicable, but nothing special
I've played all of the most recent Call of Duty games, although note, I've always found the campaign to be the highlight of these games.Campaign - The story is quite good here, and it has good performances, graphics and setpieces. However, it doesn't do anything particularly new, while none of the levels are bad (they are all a good standard) none of the missions particularly stand out to me as being memorable.Multiplayer - I enjoyed this multiplayer more than some of the previous games. The maps are all similarly structured, but they are pretty good. Gunplay is a strong as ever. However, I feel like the sound design is slightly lacking in comparison to other games in the franchise. The weapons are all good, and I like the new progression system and the divsions the player can choose from. The new WAR mode is a win also.Zombies - I've never really been a huge fan of zombies modes in general. This one is scarier than the others though, and it seems to have some complex mechanics, but I never went too deep into it to provide much more detail than that.Overall, it's a solid game, not a standout game, but a functioning and ultimately decent one.
