What's the difference between this and the pro version. Just speed?

On the Pro, max speed is c.50% higher on both 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz frequencies. However, speeds on the lite should be more than adequate in a simple domestic deployment. In addition on the Pro both of the frequencies have 3 antennae for each frequency, meaning you have greater bandwidth i.e. more users at the higher speed. I have one Unifi AC lite and two Pros in use. In practice I find the range of the Pros is greater, despite the official spec being the same. The Pro is also physically bigger. Does this support wireless extension of an existing unifi network without an ethernet cable?

Yes. A single wired/primary Unifi AP can 'host' up to 4 secondary APs. A secondary AP cannot host tertiary APs, only wired APs can host.Unifi doesn't use the WDS repeating 'standard', it uses it's own proprietary 'Uplink' feature. This basically turns the primary AP into a wireless bridge, and the secondary APs into Wi-Fi repeaters. It's a bit cleverer than that though, the secondary APs can broadcast SSID's that the primary doesn't broadcast (although quite why anyone would want to do that is beyond me, it would be poor network design and only desirable as a very last resort).Bear in mind when repeating Wi-Fi networks that you're using some of the available bandwidth in the Wi-Fi band you use to bridge them with. This not only reduces the number of clients you can support in the band, but also reduces the total amount of clients to that of a single AP.Basically, Lets say AP1 is wired and can support 20 clients at 2.4ghz, and is on channel 11. AP2 is wired and can support 20 clients at 2.4ghz, and is on channel 1, total clients comfortably on the network = 40. If AP2 is bridged/secondary, it is a Wi-Fi client itself, and will be on the same channel. This reduces the clients available across both APs to 19 (but you get extended range). Now if we get mildly technical, my explanation isn't strictly true because the APs can support almost any number of clients. However, there is only so much bandwidth within each wireless band per channel. If all the clients connected to AP2 then have to hop through AP1 (because of the wireless bridge), it reduces the number of clients that you can serve a usable amount of bandwidth to. Not a problem for low bandwidth IOT devices, but it's best to assume that at least some of the clients will want to browse/or perform higher bandwidth activities. Anything high bandwidth like wireless CCTV or wireless music streaming/airplay, forget it.Whenever possible, it's best to run any AP as primary/wired. This is regardless of Wi-Fi brand. Is this the new version, i.e. with 802.3af

I received mine from Amazon warehouse in August 2017, and it was 24V PoE only (which was supplied).

Not powerful enough to reach outdoor garden, can you recommend a more powerful unit without drilling outside?

You could use the Ubiquiti Networks UAP-AC-LR as a long range option..... but let's be fair, why not go to the bother of using an outdoor model to get optimal external coverage. WIFI planning is important as opposed to trying to get full access from one or two ap's......if you can't get a cat5/6 to outside, do you have power outside. You could then power the device externally & mesh it over WiFi to get the coverage you need.... Hope this helps
