The distance between the cable and the tip of the bulb is roughly 35mm and the diameter of the bulb about 4mm. Drat I've gat spots before my eyes now, I should have switched the wretched things off before measuring!

You need to wrap the lights around many times so long string of lights is rapidly used up. Untange and straighten the lights first. Start at the top and work down. The following rough guide should help: 100 lights / 10m for a small 1.5m (5ft) tree. 200 lights / 20m for an average 2m (6.5ft) tree 400+ for a large tree.
