Really enjoyed it!
It's hard to recommend it, but I really liked this game. The story is compelling: Sonic's friends are trapped in a weird "in-between" dimension and you have to traverse an open world collecting MacGuffins to interact with your friends enough to progress the plot. You also do some bite-sized levels similar to those from Sonic Generations which were really fun to do and complete their challenges. These levels give you keys which you use to unlock Chaos Emeralds which allow you to challenge the final boss of each section once all seven are collected. The overall story is really interesting adding context and backstory to events and characters from Sonic Adventures 1 and 2 which was unexpected and very welcome. They took a very "Breath of the Wild" approach to this one where its an open world that you can run/grind through beating mini-bosses, collecting things, solving puzzles and even fish in. I especially loved the soundtrack for the main game as well as the smaller levels. Getting to see Sonic and friends interact in a way that acknowledged events from previous Sonic games, continuities and even from the comics was heartwarming even if they were few and far between.I will say though, I did feel overpowered very quickly. The first few mini-bosses handed my butt to me on a silver platter, but after a little bit of collecting upgrades and grinding (and I do mean less than a full hour), I steamrolled the rest of the game without much issue. In short, it's a fun and heartwarming, albeit relatively short game. If you're a Sonic fan that enjoyed Generations, Colors and/or Forces, you're going to have a good time. My final criticism of the game was that I felt it was a bit short and I really wish there would have been more interactions between the cast of characters, though I really enjoyed how they fleshed out their relationships. I got the Platinum without much effort in about 20-24 hours of playtime and Sega plans to keep adding content to the game with free updates which is exciting. However I would recommend that if you're on the fence, wait for it to go on sale. I got it for $30 and felt it was appropriate for what I got out of it.

they fixed it beyond expectations
Being a sonic fan is suffering. Mario gets good games and we get forces.. and every game since adventure 2 lol. Not to mention the launch review videos of people roasting this game. I had extremely low expectations going in but i saw they updated a bunch of stuff and have free story dlc coming so i figured id pick it up on sale.If you ever wanted to try this now is the time. All of the updates and additions since launch make this a MUCH MUCH more pleasing experience. I played this on base ps4 and it still ran like a dream, used the digital upgrade my ps5 and it was surprising to see how close the ps4 version has been to the ps5.Thankfully you dont have to do everything and trophy hunters dont need to 100% every single thing to platinum. Two things of note, focus on expanding the map first then hunt down the music notes. This game is much bigger than you realize and the music notes add songs to the "jukebox" the jukebox plays music from sonic games past and yes that includes all of the hype tracks as background music. It provides for a much more enjoyable experience than the depressing default background music. (Especially when you get flying battery song)Also dont take biggs fishing for granted. When you get burnt out hunting for "materials" fish for them. One final piece of note, is to be glad you'll be able to experience one of the best boss fights in modern gaming for the first time.

A Big Step in the Right Direction
I have been a big Sonic fan since the beginning. After SA2, there was a steady stream of disappointing games save for Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations, and Sonic Mania.Sega is finally getting it's act together. Gameplay was overall fun, story was the interesting, level design was good, and music was spot on (only disappointment on music is lack of a full album). The mini bosses were a blast, boss design were awesome.Where SF misses are the Super Sonic battles and some of the mini games. While I like bullet hell shooters, I don't want them in my gotta go fast Sonic game. The pinball mini game was good, but really felt out of place. The SS battles were all WAY to easy, even on hard mode. If you go into any battle with 300 rings, they are pushovers, even the last boss.Overall a great attempt, even though Sega continues to miss some marks.
