Wake Up and Smell the Poop!: The myths, deceptions, lies and obsessions that keep you from having the Perfect Dog

This is a wonderful concept of training dogs according to their understanding of pack hierarchy, instead of bribing them with "treats". Bribing works only for doing tricks, not for standard good behavior and general obedience. The book doesn't give enough info about specific methods for creating the desired understanding of hierarchy. But that kind of info is available from the author's other products, available on his website. (Some of those products are available on Amazon, as well.)

Generally anecdotal, a good preliminary introduction to thinking as a dog and not as a person. Unfortunately, those who have the most difficulty with this concept are also the most likely to discount and disregard it because of their emotional dependence.

I really enjoyed this book. It gives a lot of insight into Don Sullivan's The Perfect Dog System, why it works, and of course there are plenty of stories about his experiences with dogs (and Orcas and Sea Lions). It is NOT an instructional book, more as an addition to his system with a lot more background behind it. For those that feel it's "mean" or aggressive, it is NOT. It takes the stress off the dog constantly being on guard and giving it clearly defined limits so as to allow him or her to enjoy it's life.

I would have hoped to learn how to help my Terrier dog which is strong willed without treats, she is too smart for the treats, and will pick what is more fun for her.I guess this leads to by his program.

The book arrived quickly and in great shape. I’m very pleased.

This book is basically an ad to buy Don Sullivan's infomercial dog training system. You need to buy the product which includes a special collar and DVD for around $60. No where in the book does it tell you how his system works. He only tells you what great results you will see if you purchase his system.

The book is highly recommended and challenges the increasingly accepted thinking that treats are the best way to achieve optimal training. The book also looks at case studies and shortcomings from adopting he treats approach.

If you are interested in a book to set up a purchase this is the one. It is a very long commercial for the Perfect Dog dvd. It will give insight into the ideas behind the dvd, but no advise or practical working knowledge. If you want the dvd I'd check out its reviews (I do not own it), but skip the book.
