Q: We have installed 1200 watts of solar what size of controller do we need?

It depends on a couple of things, what is the voltage of the solar panels and how are you going to string them together, in series or parallel. If they are 12v panels and you string them in series you will have 144v at 8amps so the 150v 60a will work. In parallel it would be 12v 100 amps. Try to get the voltage up to save on wire size costs. Check WireSizer

Q: How much space in needed around it?

None, really, since it has its own cooling fins on the bottom. However, for practical purposes, you'll want to think about how you are going to run wires to and from it and how big those wires are (and, therefore, how easy it will be to bend them around something else).
