Does it empty the freon out to refill?

No it doesn't recovery! It is used on a system that is at zero pressure. After repair, to pull a vacaum, the vacuum gets all air out of system and draws water out of oil, should be used one to three hours, with no leaks, before charging system!

How can I test the pump using the guages?

The gauges are not for testing the pump. After your vehicle's system is emptied by pumping the freon out into a refrigerant container, or if it all leaked out on its own, then you hook up the red and blue hoses to the hot and cold side test ports on the vehicle, and you hook up the yellow hose to the vacuum pump and the third port on the gauge manifold. Then after making sure your pump has the correct amount of vacuum pump oil, you turn it on and open the blue and red valves on the gauge manifold. You will see the needles on the gauges move as the vacuum is pulled. If the gauges show that the pump it is pulling a vacuum, that's all the test you need. Continue pulling a vacuum until the desired vacuum is reached as will be shown on the gauges. Then disconnect the yellow hose from the pump and attach that end of the hose to your freon source. Close the red valve (hot high pressure side) and the vacuum in the system will pull in the freon from the cold (low pressure side), blue valve open, once you open the valve on the freon cannister or can. Before letting in the freon, start your car engine and turn on front and rear air conditioning to full cool. Your first 12 ounces or so of refrigerant should be enough to engage the compressor clutch, and from there your vehicle compressor will pull the freon in. If not, you may have an issue with the compressor or the compressor clutch. In that event, check the relay located in one of the vehicle's fuse boxes that is for the compressor clutch. Take it out and clean the prongs and then re-install it. If that does not cause the clutch to engage, then either the relay, the clutch or the compressor is faulty and will need serviced.

I got the pump but not the gauges why

The picture show what looks like R134 quick connects. Is that correct that they're included?

It is for r134. The original description said r410a but when my order was confirmed it did not specify r410a. The seller said I could buy the connector for r410a. I’ve not bought anything yet.

Works Good, Needs a fitting for R134a

Despite the product description, this kit is not compatible with R134A, as-is. All the threaded fittings are SAE 1/4 flare. An adapter fitting is required to connect an R134a can of refirgerant.
