Easy cable solution for 2015
Was left with cable internet service but no cable modem after a move. Already had a collection of wireless routers and modems with ethernet or phone cable connectors, but needed modem in a hurry. This little model suits the bill. It turns the cable signal from the black, round, coax wire in the wall into a ethernet cable. This cable can go directly into a computer or into a wireless router which will broadcast the signal throughout your house. When first plugged in (after verifying all lights were blinking correctly) with Comcast as the internet provider, I opened the internet (Chrome) on my laptop and was redirected to the comcast website, asking for log-in information which I had collected ahead of time. After logging in with my account information, a little progress bar appeared where Comcast was "identifying" my new router. 15min later everything was complete and I was using internet and downloading Amazon videos just like before.Does it have the speed of a fancier model? I have not run tests, but I can't complain. Some apps download about 1.5Mb/s. Usually, 5-6 devices are running off the router that this modem powers. Can't imagine what an extra $50 for the "most recent" model would have provided.

Buyer Beware If Buying from Amazon Warehouse
The product itself is fine if bought brand new. My mistake is that I bought this one from the Amazon warehouse to save a couple bucks for my daughter's college apartment. Comcast was unable to connect to the unit and stated that it was 'used' and assigned to another account. They investigated to try and track this down to resolve it (stolen merchandise/bill left unpaid?) but after several days, we gave up waiting and purchased a different unit from another store close to her college. It was advertised by Amazon as being 'repackaged' so I thought that just meant the original box was damaged as it did come in a plain brown box. In the end, I spent more money than I saved to replace the unit, plus all the aggravation of spending HOURS on the phone with Comcast trying to solve this puzzle. I've learned my lesson and just wanted to share to save someone else the hassle.

Older model less cost
This model is a year or so old and DOCSYS 2. I bought a used version of this modem and for only 1/3 the price of new one so what's not to like. It came with a CAT 5 installation cable but did not come with the utility disk but then there is really nothing to installing a cable modem. All your ISP needs is the MAC address listed on the unit. There is no power switch as such which means you more or less have a static IP address unless you unplug it, Release the IP Addy through Windows or your ISP changes it. What you do have is a switch to deactivate the unit by putting it into standby mode for security purposes if your computer is on 24/7. Simply push the button and you are back online.ISPs often charge a monthly fee to rent the same thing so this more than pays for itself in just a couple months. As long as it works and you don't need the router/modem version then go with this unit. You save plenty over the cost of a new one. A final note of caution. Check with your ISP to make sure they support the use of this model modem on their network.

Set up was a BREEZE and Time Warner just needed the HFC MAC number to switch
I switched to Time Warner lite-internet from ATT dsl last week...TWC neglected to tell me I would be renting the modem and I found out about the $4.99 monthly rental fee when I picked it up...luckily they gave me a list of approved modems and I looked them all up on amazon and chose this one because 1. for the price it had the best reviews, 2. I have "lite" internet so I didn't need something super powerful, 3. in 10 months this thing will have paid for itself and 4. I'm not very techy and it seemed like the easiest to set up. It came today and all I had to do was hook it up and call Time Warner...ADVICE...TWC will need the HFC MAC number (not the USB CPE MAC number)...the HFC MAC number was both on the box and on the modem...also KEEP the TWC rep on the phone until switch completed...I had the option of having them phone me when switch completed but the rep kept getting an "error" so they had to transfer me so I'm glad I stayed on the phone...all in all a fairly quick switch...took about 15 minutes, but if you have an error and get a call back then that is more time wasted...might as well just get it all done in one phone call. The unit looks to be better quality than the one TWC gave me but seems to run about as fast...if it was a lot faster then I would bump up to 5 stars. Also, the vertical profile will help keep the unit cooler. If for some reason I have problems with this unit I will come back to adjust my rating, but for now I'm very happy so easy to set up and now that I have returned TWCs modem, I'm not throwing $$ away on rental.

The modem is OK but it's application limited due to changes made by some IT providers.
