Bought two of these, to act as spares for my new NAS enclosure, I have now replaced my old 2 x 2 bay NAS with this new 4 bay NAS, so opted to reuse the old drives from them to form a Raid 5 configuration in my new 4 bay NAS. A word of advice, but when setting up NAS enclosures now, it is better to get proper marked NAS drives, however as these were still functioning, I wanted to make sure the old drives were not wasted. 4 x 500gb drives in Raid 5, results in about 1.35tb, mainly as 1 of the 4 is used as redundancy, should 1 of them fail, so in effect you are using 3 x 500gb and 1 x 500gb is used should any one of the 3 fail, you also lose additional space on the remaining three as its reserved for the system. As it turned out, one of my 4 drives failed when being formatted in the NAS, hence why I bought these two new, one as a replacement, and one as backup. These drives are shipped in a plain cardboard box, marked with 'Fragile' tape, inside the drive is in a Anti-Static bag (clip sealed), the anti-static bag has a layer of bubble wrap loosely wrapped round that. There is no 'desiccant gel" in the anti-static bag to keep moisture out, both the drives I got were Western Digital, and had manufacturer dates of 2014. One was September 2014, and December 2014, see images. This is a good price for 500gb, and as far as I know, these are new 'old' stock, so should last as long as if they were made in the last 6 months. Both drives are supplied 'uninitialised' so will need to be initialised FIRST, before formatting, Windows 10 picked up they needed initialising when I used in an external USB case, both initialised fine and both formatted fine and both gave 456gb free (you will always lose some space when formatting). Note: these are 3.5 inch drives, and suitable for Desktop PCs, NAS drives (but you should get drives specifically marked for NAS, also suitable for external USB drives in the correct case. They are NOT suitable for PS4 (which takes 2.5 internal, and laptops, which also take 2.5 inch. Well worth it for the price, but make sure you initialise it first, they are NOT formatted for use..
