They changed the processing...not good like before
Hoosier Hill has definitely changed their formula or processing. This is a staple in our household and the last two bags I have gotten do not rehydrate well and the crumbles stay crunchy. They no longer reconstitute to the texture of ground meat and I have had to throw out some casseroles because of the hard texture.I am disappointed they would change a good thing....I won't buy from Hoosier Hill anymore. Which is a real shame beacause I have purchased from them for years.

This Stuff is Great!
I love this TVP, I probably eat it 3 times a week. I'm going to share a few tips I've learned so you can get the most out of your TVP experience.Reconstitute 1:1, 1 cup of TVP to 1 cup of hot liquid.Yeast Extract is your friend, use it with TVP.Pulse the dried TVP in a food processor or blender to make a finer "mince"Perfect for Tacos, meat sauces, chilli, sausages (and sausage patties), and meatballs.Herbs and seasoning will transform TVP into whatever you want it to be.If you're on the fence, try it, this stuff is so versatile and easy to use, high in protein, long shelf life, a great value all around. I wish more people knew about TVP, it's one of those best-kept secrets at the moment.

Great Value!
This review is probably overdue, because I've been using this TVP for a while now. Let me say up front: this is a BIG bag of TVP, and I feel like it's a great value for the price, especially considering it's non-gmo. For some reason it seems a bit darker in color than other TVP I've bought in the past in health food stores, but that doesn't seem to have any impact on the taste or texture which is, well, very typical of TVP - slightly firm, relatively little flavor at all. Why would anyone buy such a food? Personally, I saute finely chopped onions and baby bella mushrooms and mix with hydrated TVP, which I then mix basically 50/50 with ground beef and seasonings. The resulting mix can be used just like ground beef in just about any recipe, but is healthier and a little less expensive than just ground beef alone. It takes a little extra time, but it can be made ahead in large batches and frozen (raw or pre-cooked). It might be healthier to use as a beef replacement, but if you have picky kids (or in my case, a picky husband), using it 50/50 with ground meat makes it almost impossible to tell the difference vs. meat alone.

Cheaper but way worse
In my personal opinion, this is barely edible. It has a dark, unnatural flavour which is detectable no matter how you use it. Raw TVP should taste like bland cereal and should absorb the flavours of the rest of the dish, hiding its own. I've tried my best to make it taste good, but it doesn't. The Whole Foods bulk TVP is much cheaper and tastes better. Bob's Red Mill TVP is more expensive but tastes much better. I can't work with this stuff.

You can fool everyone with this!
The first time I used the product I was not impressed at all. I soaked it in water and added it to something I was making. But then, I learned about putting it in the pan without reconstituting it first. Cook your aromatics, add your spices and the TVP (1 cup dry = 1 lb of ground beef). Let it absorb some of those flavors from the pan and then add your liquids a little at a time. Simmer for a bit. I have used this method for both chili and for a meat sauce for pasta. Because of the brown color of this TVP (not beige like some), it looks exactly like ground beef as does the texture. Not one person knew it was TVP. I am sold on this stuff.

Dangerous packaging with safety issues
I've ordered things from Hoosier Hill Farm before, but was really disappointed in this product. The product was unsealed, and when we opened the bag, there was a large plastic pull tab inside the package. Really disgusting and dangerous, so we threw it away.

its a good meat sub and its easy to season with anything ...
been hearing about this stuff in the rumor mill for awhile and decided to cook with it. after my first meal, i knew it was the stuff in jbox tacos for sure. its a good meat sub and its easy to season with anything and can be a good meat filler when cooked with ground meat also... just like the way jbox does it.ive also found that mixing this stuff with seitan really brings out a nice "meaty" texture, which is exactly what i was looking for.just add water, wait for ten minutes and boom - a nice protein to accompany any meal.

This Bag Has My Family Really Excited!
This has been a really great value. I have been using this for about a couple of weeks now and have made stuffed bell peppers and enchiladas... that sort of thing. At first my family could not believe their good luck, I was cooking with ground beef again! Well, no not really, but tvp is letting me cook some of those foods that they really missed! I reconstitute them with very hot water, add garlic powder, cumin, a little liquid smoke and away we go! Although this is a little less fine and a little darker than the tvp I started with, I think that overall, it is a great value and I am enjoying working with it. I know it is going to last a long time!

This is great TVP
This TVP has a bit of a firmer texture as long as you hydrate it well and add the flavour as it hydrates cook in a boiled soup base on med about 2 parts or more soup to 1 part tvp cook for 15 mins or so and if its still a bit firm and needs to boil longer and absorbs all the soup add boiling water its very easy to use then add it to a meal just like it was ground meat into onion gravy or spaghetti sauce even lasagna even wontons its actually hard to tell its not real meat if you do it right and add enough flavour ......good luck

Excellent ground beef substitute at a good price.
The texture of this TVP is nicer than other brands I've tried. It seems to have a little more "tooth" to it and doesn't mush as easily as others. And the 5lb bag is HUGE!!I use this TVP for either Mexican ground beef substitute (equal parts TVP and boiling water plus taco seasoning) or as the base for vegetarian shepherd's pie (mix TVP with vegetable bouillon and stir in a small amount of flour or corn starch slurry to thicken) and both work really well. I haven't used it for camping or backpacking, but obviously for the virtually zero weight per volume it would be excellent for this use.I would definitely order this product again.

Good quality.
Good quality TVP -- I use it a lot to boost protein in mixed dishes like casseroles, etc. Also rehydrate with beef stock for tacos and burritos.
