How tight are these screwed, and can they be opened by hand without a screwdriver?

They can be opened and closed by hand.

Why are we not supposed to tighten these by hand?

I have atleast 50 of these type miniature glass vials in different shapes, I use a toothpick when closing the top to prevent any cross-threading that can damage the piece, you can use your fingers if you like, just have to screw it on gently.
