The MA884 is optical instrument that is based on the measurement of the refractive index of a solution. The measurement of refractive index is simple and quick and provides the vintner an accepted method for sugar content analysis. Samples are measured after a simple user calibration with deionized or distilled water. Within seconds the instrument measures the refractive index of the grape. This digital refractometer eliminates the uncertainty associated with mechanical refractometers and is easily portable for measurements in the field.

Great device for brewing
Great price when I got it. Price doubled shortly after so at over $100 maybe I wouldn't have bought it. So you have to weigh the cost VS how cool it is to have. That said this works like a charm. I use it for home brewing and had been using an analog one for awhile but I can't adjust the diopter enough for my lousy eyesight and with glasses on it's hard to get a clean reading because of the light spill. Anyway this unit solves all of that. You do have to make sure to have enough liquid in the cup. It actually takes a little more than the analog version. If you don't then evaporation will actually start making the readings drift up. IF you use this for brewing you NEED to get the tool from seanterrill.com so your SG & FG readings are acurately converted to gravity readings. Most tools do OK with SG but are way off with FG. AND the scales get off with really high gravity beers. Still this is a great device and avoids losing beer to gravity readings and is a much lower exposure to nasties.
